Swastika, pro-Trump vandalism at Beastie Boy’s playground
New York Sen. Daniel Squadron, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, city councilmembers Lander and Stephen Levin, alongside other community leaders, plan to hold an event Sunday to condemn the incident. Unfortunately, he lost the battle and died on May 4, 2012 at the age of 47.
Yauch, whose stage name with the Beastie Boys was MCA, was Jewish as are his surviving bandmates Michael Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock).
“Adam Yauch is weeping for our country”.
Squadron also tweeted directly at President-elect Trump, expressing hope that Trump would join them on Sunday in their public denouncement of hate crimes in Brooklyn and around the country. “We elected a president that is giving our children the message that it’s okay to attack people of color”. The Southern Poverty Law Center has noted a drastic uptick in hate crimes, receiving almost six months’ worth of reports of hate crimes in a one-week period.
“Spray-painting swastikas in a children’s playground is a messed-up thing to do”. The metal locomotive jungle gym showed no trace of the offensive graffiti as kids played on the park’s recreational equipment.
Yauch, whom the park is named after, was a Brooklyn native and practicing Buddhist.
Yauch, along with the other Beastie Boys bandmates, was Jewish.
“For us as New Yorkers, if you see something say something has to mean something different today”, he said, referencing the Homeland Security Department’s motto to encourage people to report potential terrorism.
He was a strong supporter of feminism, even going so far as to apologize for any lyrics earlier in his career that might have caused offence.
Friday’s incident follows several instances of hateful messages scrawled throughout the city since election day. “Hate has no place in Brooklyn, NYC, or America”, a flyer promoting the gathering read.
