Paul Ryan defends Steve Bannon as crucial to Trump’s victory

With Ryan receiving unanimous support from his party, his election is expected to be nothing more that a formality.
But as Republican plot their end-of-year spending strategy with Trump and map out their 2017 legislative agenda, some are urging them to set their expectations carefully. “So they’re more than happy to ignore and cast aside the policies that got Trump elected in exchange for going along with the Ryan’s policies”.
AILSA CHANG, BYLINE: How quickly the kissing and making up begins after you win a presidential election. “He’s done a good job in Congress”. The better call would have been to remind both Ryan and Trump that it is not when the House of Representatives serves as a rubber stamp for the President, that good and fiscally conservative actions result.

Though Ryan easily won the nomination for the speakership in today’s closed-door meeting, the weeks leading up to the conference elections proved to be contentious.
Ryan has some personal policy disagreements with Trump, including on trade and entitlement reform. House conservatives denounced Ryan for his disloyalty.
House Republicans had been debating a proposal from Rep. Tom Rooney (R., Fla.) that would have let lawmakers request funding only for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation projects, aides said. There was heated back and forth over the issue.
Labrador is in a clear minority among House Republicans-Ryan (R-Wis.) enjoys broad support among the GOP rank-and-file-but his qualms reflect ongoing discomfort over how Ryan’s brand of Republican politics will meld with Trump’s.
Following Trump’s stunning upset victory in the presidential election, the GOP now has full control over the US government. “I’m going to have to say, ‘President-elect Trump, bring out your Sharpie, we’ve got to do a lot of autographing'”. “The point is Donald Trump wants job”, he said. “We have an historic opportunity to turn President-elect [Donald] Trump’s extraordinary victory into progress for the American people”. This is something we share. “We will be working hand in glove”.
CHANG: And so for now, a caucus known for its infighting is crowing about newfound harmony. “They don’t give a rat’s ass what I think”.
CHANG: Sticking together may be the problem for the other side now.
On the Democratic side, House Democrats postponed leadership elections that had been scheduled for Thursday until November 30 amid signs of dissatisfaction with their veteran leaders.
More than two dozen House Democrats wrote Pelosi this week asking her to delay the elections.
