We are the unluckiest team in the league, claims frustrated Mourinho
He was mainly used in the Europa League at the start of the season, but after showcasing his talents, Mourinho has been forced into using his services in the Premier League. Their return had been three points.
Arsenal – in sparkling form heading into Saturday’s clash – were lacklustre throughout at Old Trafford, but substitute Giroud was on hand in the 89th minute to cancel out Juan Mata’s opener. He said: “We had one transfer window and four months of work – we have lots of young players and older players”.
Beckham is unlikely to have had too many kind words for the 30-year-old front man, as an Old Trafford favorite and Manchester United supporter.
Mourinho, though, believes it is only misfortune that is keeping his team from the Champions League places.
“It was a really poor performance from Arsenal, but they’ve come away and got a point”, Neville told Sky Sports.
“Against Stoke we have to win five, six nil and we draw, against Burnley we have to win five, six nil, we draw”.
It is a third successive league draw at home for Mourinho’s side and the Portuguese manager is growing frustrated by United’s recent misfortunes.
Tweet of the matchStar ManJuan Mata: Always seemed one of the players most likely to make a difference, and so it proved as he arrived in the area at the right time to break the deadlock after 68 minutes. “Arsenal are a team who let their opponents play. I have a very good feeling with Andre Marriner”, the United boss explained.
Mourinho cut a dejected figure at the final whistle as this result means he has now faced Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the league this season and not recorded a win. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic, suspended Marcus Rashford led the line, but the most crucial selection may have been in midfield. That, in the long term, might be a combination that works very well for United, which for Rooney would have been another blow in a bruising week.
Although both managers and set of fans will be dleighted not to have lost this game, the real winners of this are the teams challenging them at the top of the table.
This fixture has provided plenty of drama down the years but there was little to get the crowd excited about here, with the teams’ decision to field two defensive midfielders stifling much of the attacking play. The way we pressed and the way we controlled their counter attacks. I do think, however, after internationals you have to give a bit of leeway.
There was a time when Rooney, who as an Everton teenager announced himself with a staggeringly brilliant goal against a far better Arsenal side than this, was sometimes Manchester United’s only option.
