Texas has chose to fire Strong, according to multiple reports
Strong is scheduled to appear as his weekly news conference at 11 a.m. Monday as Texas (5-6, 3-5 Big 12) prepares for the regular season finale against TCU on Friday.
However, shortly after the Statesman’s report, UT Athletic Director Mike Perrin released a statement contradicting the announcement.
The college football world blew up over the reported firing of Texas head coach Charlie Strong Saturday night. “They’ve continued to work through some really, really hard situations, and I’ve said it before, I feel like we have the right kind of kids in our program. We’re a family in there”, Buechele said, before adding of Strong: “We’re going to fight for him this next game”. During his three years at Texas, he went 16-20 and 12-14 in Big 12 play.
Alex Barnes rushed 120 of his 129 yards and all four touchdowns in the second half, and Kansas State doubled up Baylor 42-21 on Saturday.
His wife was weeping outside the Longhorns’ locker room. And he lost his one bowl game against Arkansas. After close losses to West Virginia and Kansas, they’re now 5-6. UT will have to buy Strong out of his contract for $10 million if the school does decide to let him go. He went 5-7 previous year, resulting in Texas’ second missed postseason since 1998 (when Brown had first taken over).
There have been many rumblings about Strong’s longevity at Texas as the Longhorns have continued to struggle.
Who comes next? Tom Herman is the name everyone keeps mentioning, as he’s guiding Houston to another strong season, which included wins over Oklahoma and Louisville. Even Strong didn’t seem optimistic about his chances when he was asked “Do you know what this loss means for your future?” post-game, seeming nearly ready to break down as he said “No idea”. The loss, the worst in the Charlie Strong era, gave Kansas its first FBS-level win in two years. He fumbled twice. The Longhorns had six turnovers, the final one an interception by freshman quarterback Shane Buechele in overtime.
Matthew Wymans 25-yard field goal sent Strong striding off the field. We wanted to play well.
We would have to wait for the Longhorns game against TCU and what would be results of the game to the team and to their coach as well. “We could have put the game away early”.
Asked about his coachs future, Warrick replied simply: Trying not to think about it.. They’re now 1-17 when trailing at halftime during Strong’s tenure.
Texas has a rich football history and won 10-plus games in nine straight seasons from 2001 through 2009, a run that included a 2005 BCS national title.
A few hours after USC finishes the regular season next Saturday against Notre Dame, the Trojans would claim the division title if the Utes beat No. 12 Colorado, which lost at USC last month. According to Houston sources and those familiar with the coach’s thinking, Herman would have “strong interest” in the position.
