US police hunting man who shot anti-Trump protester
Twenty-nine-year-old yoga teacher Sonja Spray says she heard about the Saturday morning demonstration on Facebook and made a decision to join the protest over the election of Donald Trump.
“As such, we’re rallying in support of those demographics, not to protest a Trump presidency”, organizers said.
A nationwide wave of demonstrations since Trump’s Election Day victory continued Sunday, with protests in cities ranging from NY to Muskegon, Mich.
Philadelphia, Penn., was one of many cities across the US that held a third night of protests against the election of Donald Trump as president.
On Sunday, around 100 people peacefully protested in front of the CNN building in Los Angeles, said a member of CNN security.
Labelling the protestors professional or incited, said Kenneth Roth, the head of Human Rights Watch, doesnt change their First Amendment right: the right of the people peaceably to assemble.
Numerous protesters say they will keep marching right up until Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
Rallies also took place in Sacremento and hundreds of protesters formed a human chain around the almost 5.6 kilometre perimetre of Oakland’s Lake Merritt.
People gathered in New York’s Washington Square neighborhood in lower Manhattan on Friday, some carrying enormous red balloons and placards with hearts and the words “peace and love”.
“We will facilitate a march as long as it’s on the streets we ask them to stay on”, said Sgt. Pete Simpson of Portland police. “We are going to rally at City Hall but we’re not going to march”, he said.
Portland, Oregon police are using flash-bang grenades Friday night to disperse a crowd filled with hundreds of people protesting President-elect Donald Trump.
Police briefly fired pepper balls at protesters, some of whom threw rocks at officers and chanted threats including “Kill the Police”. Organized by BlackMatters, a nonprofit news outlet which focuses on black issues in the United States, the event’s Facebook page emphasized that it would be a peaceful demonstration.
Rowdy demonstrators marched through downtown Portland, Oregon, again Saturday night despite calls from the mayor and police chief for calm. Police arrested two teenagers in the shooting. The Los Angeles Police Department warned that students from several local schools were planning to walk out from their classes Monday.
In Los Angeles where 8,000 marched on Saturday, hundreds have been arrested in recent days and some have vandalized property but the vast majority of the thousands of protesters have remain peaceful.
At least two people were detained by police: One person on suspicion of spray painting a police cruiser and another for trying to attack a police officer with his bicycle. Demonstrations have taken place in Oakland, Calif.; Baltimore; Kansas City, Mo.; Milwaukee; Miami; and Portland, Ore. A group of Mexicans at statue representing independence in Mexico City expressed their concerns about a possible wave of deportations.
