Haseeb Hameed to make his England debut in Rajkot
England, on the other hand, are still recovering from their loss in the second Test against Bangladesh where they shared the two-test series 1-1.
Hameed will be England’s youngest debutant – at 19 years 297 days – since the late Ben Hollioake played against Australia in 1997 and becomes the first opening batsman produced by county cricket side Lancashire since Michael Atherton made his debut in 2001. When they last toured India, the hosts were beaten convincingly in the Test series. We want to win series, we want to win Test matches. The series, more importantly, exposed their frailties against spinners on turning strips.
Stuart Broad, a cricketer not prone to hyperbole, has conceded England’s five-Test series in India will be the toughest challenge of his career but views Wednesday’s opener in Rajkot, where he will win his 100th cap, as the ideal chance to “right some wrongs” from Bangladesh.
Cook, 31, also sought to dampen speculation about his future as England’s Test skipper after admitting that he could quit following the current tour of India.
But Hameed insists they have the personnel and the belief to push for series victory during the next six weeks – as Cook’s England did on their last trip four years ago. England Test series starts Wednesday, those milestones will go into the records.
Kohli was not the only Indian to struggle in England, with the team’s main spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin taking just three wickets. But going by former India captain Sourav Ganguly, he won’t be the game-changer.
“I wouldn’t play him (Anderson) in India to be honest”.
“The last time England were here no-one saw them winning and we hammered them (by 10 wickets in Mumbai and seven wickets in Kolkata to win the series 2-1) so let’s not get let’s not get too gloomy. He has lost a bit of pace”.
“I try not to think about end of careers because I think that makes you slow down. Stuart Broad bowled at him last summer and was nearly straight on the phone to me saying how impressed he was with this guy”, said Cook as he went on to shed light on why he wasn’t wary of throwing him into the deep end straightaway. “Not in Vizag (Visakhapatnam) where the ball will turn square”, he added. And play three spinners – Moeen Ali, Gareth Batty and another spinner. Botham’s 100th Test came more than a decade after his heroics in the 1981 Ashes series, helping England to a less famous series win over New Zealand with a draw in Wellington in February 1992.
The Indian cricket team is not losing sleep over the introduction of the Decision Review System (DRS) in the five-Test series against England commencing here tomorrow with captain Virat Kohli saying the referral process is not rocket science.
