Murray Beats Djokovic To Win ATP Finals; Clinches Year-End Number One Ranking
The 4-time defending championship suffered his first loss in the last match of the ATP Finals in his career and it was also his first loss to rival Andy Murray indoors.
“It means a lot, obviously”.
“I felt exhausted. I didn’t feel great this morning, just a bit sluggish, a bit heavy-legged”, he said.
“I wasn’t close to that. That’s what motivates me”.
It was a proud moment for the Murray clan, who became the first set of brothers to top the tennis rankings at the same time.
Djokovic, who was aiming to match Roger Federer’s record of six titles, had flawless preparation for the final, but Murray was simply unplayable as he shocked his long-time rival in the winner-takes-all shootout to extend his winning run to 24 matches.
Djokovic had no complaints and admitted he had been well below his best in a lethargic performance that included 30 unforced errors.
Murray, who takes home Dollars 2,391,000 and 1,500 Emirates ATP Rankings points, is the 10th different No. 1 ranked player to win the title at the season finale.
“It’s been a tough rivalry”.
But they lost 6-7 (5/7) 6-4 10-4, meaning Murray and Soares can not be overtaken. Let me just take you down the memory lane.
Murray cruised through the first set and held a 4-1 lead in the second before Djokovic mounted a comeback.
The first set as expected began neck-to-neck between two of the strongest in world tennis. “You never beat a player as good as Novak if you don’t play well”. Despite glimpses of brilliance, Djokovic could not string together enough games in a row to take the momentum away from Murray. He is the best player.
According to BBC, Novak Djokovic said to the media that Andy Murray was definitely the number one in the world and he deserved to win. “These next few years, I want to try and make them the best of my career, try and win as much as I can”, he added.
Murray and Soares, who teamed up this year, won the Australian Open and U.S. Open titles.
“It was just a huge match to try and finish number one”.
“Congrats to Novak on everything he has achieved this year”, Murray said. While Djokovic has for the most part struggled since winning his second Grand Slam title of the campaign at the French Open in June, Murray has gone from strength to strength. Every time I would get an opportunity, I would miss. And, Murray earning the no. 1 spot without having beaten the former world no. 1 seemed a little incomplete.
However, the Wimbledon champion and successive Olympic gold victor said he could “still mess up” and “make mistakes” in his career.
