Josh McCown struggled in relief duty for Cleveland Browns
In this case that would be the New York Giants next Sunday in Cleveland. But on second and five at the Cleveland 34, David DeCastro was penalized for a false start and the Steelers wound up taking Boswell’s 33-yard field goal.
Quarterback Robert Griffin III will begin practicing this week as he attempts to return from a fractured coracoid bone he suffered in his left shoulder September 11 in the regular-season opener.
Griffin has been cleared to practice this week and will undergo another medical exam to see if he can take contact. Roethlisberger’s completion percentage at home this season is 71.34 with 15 touchdowns to two interceptions.
After bottoming out against the Steelers (5-5) on Sunday in a game that saw them yield eight sacks and again get a quarterback injured, captain Joe Thomas said what was on just about everyone’s mind. At times it seemed the quarterbacks held the ball too long.
Coach Hue Jackson said he would have to look at the tape to know the errors in protection. “We all respect him a lot and we’re all happy for him”. Cody is in the concussion protocol. “Our main focus is to go out there and prove that the next week, go out there and play to win”.
“I expect Josh to play well, and he will”.
Jackson said Monday via Cabot that the Browns have “to continue to have each other’s backs”, and in voicing their concerns about Cleveland’s ability to protect its quarterbacks, that’s exactly what Pryor and Thomas are doing.
On a blustery day in Cleveland, the Browns dropped back to throw 49 times and ran 13. They are busting their tails.
“I don’t know. We’ll have to talk to our management and that’s a question for them, but we can’t keep getting these guys hit. We owe it to the rest of the guys in the locker room, the coaches, the people in the organization and the city to get this thing turned around”. Both Kessler and McCown absorbed the punishment of four sacks each.
Before coming into week 11, the Steelers had the second fewest sacks in the league. The Browns have won three regular-season games since November 23, 2014.
“It’s awesome”, said quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, a longtime teammate of Harrison’s.
“Obviously, it’s not ideal, but it’s part of the job”, McCown said. They are tied atop the division with the Baltimore Ravens, who lost in Dallas. “I think he understands that, and we just have to do a better job of protecting the ball”, added Jackson.
Cleveland has had six different quarterbacks under center this season because of injuries, including Pryor, a former college quarterback. Starter Cody Kessler was sidelined by a concussion for the second time in five games.
Kessler also suffered a concussion October 23 against the Cincinnati Bengals and missed one game. Tight end Gary Barnidge recorded his first touchdown on the year.
Harrison drilled Kessler in the third quarter to pass Jason Gildon (77) for the most sacks in the Steelers’ storied defensive history. The problem this season has been the lack of protection. He popped his head inside and found linebacker James Harrison going through a series of Instragram-worthy workouts just hours removed from becoming the franchise’s all-time sack leader. Bookmakers were reaching for painkillers when Miami, a 1-point road favorite, stunned ‘dog bettors and Jeff Fisher with two Ryan Tannehill touchdown passes in the final four minutes to win 14-10.
Pittsburgh finished the half with lopsided advantages in total first downs (18-4), total net yards (217-50), net yards passing (132-31) net yards rushing (85-19), offensive plays (41-17) and time of possession (9:18, 5:42).
