Donald Trump opponents try to beat him at the Electoral College
Simply put in terms of the electoral strategy, it’s not that the Clinton camp was out of sync with reality as many analysts including Bernie Sanders argue; the reality was very well understood but ignored underestimating people’s desperation to vote someone like Trump against her.The arrogance took the best of both the Clintons and Obamas that till the election night saw Trump as merely a joke.
In the November 8 election, Trump secured 306 electoral votes to Clinton’s 232. Following last week’s shocking election, there is considerable anger and fear being felt across the nation.
I soon realized that altering the outcome of the Electoral College’s vote is a fool’s errand.
P. Bret Chiafalo, a Democratic elector in Washington state, said he and a small group of other electors from the party are working to contact their Republican counterparts and ask them to vote for any GOP candidate besides Trump, preferably Mitt Romney or John Kasich.
Let us finally assume that Clinton gets 80 percent of the votes in the first state but only 45 percent of the votes in the eight other states, and that Trump gets the balance of 20 percent in the first state plus 55 percent in each of the eight other states.
A number of other students set up tables before the election encouraging students to register to vote, and several others were set up during Election Day for any students who had any questions.
The Electoral College system was created to ensure that presidents would have to receive support from a diverse array of people around the country. But the president overwhelmingly won the electoral college, 332 to 206.
America’s Founders did not want direct democracy.
“It was desirable that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the person to whom so important a trust was to be confided”, writes Alexander Hamilton in Federalist No. 68, the paper known for discussing “The Mode of Electing Presidents”.
The means by which we elect our president should not have its origins in racist, anti-populist motives.
For example, he pointed to two outliers, ME and Nebraska, where laws require that two of each state’s electoral votes go to the statewide popular-vote victor, along with one from each congressional district.
Trump has shot back, tweeting Wednesday: “If the election were based on total popular vote I would have campaigned in N.Y. Florida and California and won even bigger and more easily”.
In one email, someone told Graham his “vote against Mr. Trump, a demagogue, would be the epitome of patriotism”. If Connecticut’s citizens had the same voting power, it would have 18 electoral votes rather than seven. Millions of Americans are anxious that they will be cast aside by Trump’s America.
There is nothing nefarious about the compact.
“She has to stop all this … this is ridiculous”, she said. A 2009 poll in CT showed 74 percent in favor of direct elections, including two-thirds of Republicans. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota; Gov. Andrew Cuomo of NY and former Gov. Deval Patrick of MA. Clinton’s votes in California and NY were not “worth” as much in Electoral College support. The bill enjoys bipartisan support.
In 2000, Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote to Republican George W. Bush in a race so close it was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
I hear it all too often, as I make my rounds throughout my district: “My vote doesn’t matter, so why should I make the effort to vote?” All but two states are winner-take-all electoral contests. The argument lacks merit.
Fox had his own experience with the weight of a vote.
Let’s elect the president as we do every other elected official in the country, by the victor of the popular vote.
