Fisher: No Goff yet as quiet offense not on QB
The Jets started their third quarterback of the season this afternoon, with Bryce Petty making his first National Football League start in the wake of injuries to Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith. Some will say that Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree simply wanted it more and wrestled the ball away from the receiver, but given Enunwa’s body positioning, he looked to be in an nearly no leverage situation. He was poised. He threw a deep ball well. “It’s an area that needs to improve for us to make the push we want to make”.
I’d like to apologize to you on behalf of sports if you watched yesterday’s 9-6 Rams win over the Jets, a game that seemed absolutely destined to be a tie and didn’t end up with even that novelty to recommend it. This team makes me feel insane. In the preseason, we felt good about going out there and building off of all the stuff I learned the year before. Considering the Jets kicker missed an extra point, Zuerlein’s reliability in this game was something the Rams really needed. Petty wasn’t spectacular in his first career start, and he did duplicate what regular starter Ryan Fitzpatrick has seemingly trademarked – a late game-ending interception – but he acquitted himself enough to earn a second chance from Bowles.
“Going forward, it all depends on the play, the health and everything else with everybody”, Bowles said. “I’m not going to let this define me”.
Fitzpatrick sprained his left knee at Miami on November 6 and was limited in practice all week while splitting first-team snaps with Petty.
But no one would fault Bowles for tabbing Petty as the starter. He deferred much of the credit to long snapper Jake McQuaide and the rest of the Rams’ punt team, but said that hitting a bit punt felt like crushing the ball on the golf course.
The reeling Jets (3-7) finally get their open date this weekend, and Bowles said he’ll figure out the starter during the off week and announce his decision when the team reports to work next Monday.
From there, Cunningham fumbled and lost a yard, tight end Lance Kendricks failed to pick up a yard on a pass and Keenum threw incomplete, and Keenum threw incomplete. That’s a testimony to what kind of coach Fisher is and his inability to develop a quarterback. As one NFC scout said this week, “He didn’t have a good college career”. It’s just about making strides. The Rams defense allowed 139 rushing yards on 25 attempts, but stopped the passing game with 157 yards allowed and 4.8 yards per pass.
Nick Folk was wide left on the extra point, his second miss of the season, leaving NY with a 6-3 lead early in the second quarter. The kid obviously has talent but the Rams (mainly Fisher) don’t think he’s ready yet. The Seahawks were able to get out of MA with the win following Arizona’s gritty win over San Francisco keeping them atop the NFC West. “That’s what you have to do against a defense like this”.
With all the talk about who the Jets quarterback should be, there is one guy who still is not part of the conversation: rookie Christian Hackenberg. Gurley’s longest run of the season, 21 yards in the fourth quarter, was wiped out by Greg Robinson’s holding penalty.
After getting the ball with 2:55 remaining and down by three, Petty tried to lead the Jets downfield.
