Oklahoma weathers snowstorm, West Virginia comeback to set up big Bedlam
This will also be the first game for both teams with the weather being a factor as wind chill temperatures will be in the 30’s and winds gusting to over 20 miles per hour.
The Sooners were able to capitalize on the emotionally-charged atmosphere at Milan Puskar Stadium while the Mountaineers unraveled. Mixon amassed 116 yards on 14 carries in the first quarter alone and finished with 147 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown.
By halftime, the Sooners had two 100-yard rushers and a 100-yard receiver – a feat Oklahoma had not accomplished since the 2008 Big 12 Championship Game. The Mountaineers rushed for 388 yards on a snowy day in Morgantown and had 579 yards of total offense in the loss.
No. 8 Oklahoma (8-2, 7-0 Big 12) at No. 10 West Virginia (8-1, 5-1).
Games like Texas Tech-Iowa State and Kansas-Texas certainly aren’t worthy of the kind of prime-time slot the eighth-ranked Sooners and 10th-ranked Mountaineers will have Saturday night. The West Virginia defense is giving up 20.6 points per game with 156 rushing yards and 253.8 passing yards per game.
If the West Virginia defense can contain those two, it will still have its hands full with sophomore running back Joe Mixon. Perine gained 160 yards and scored twice.
All but 25 of OU’s yards on the drive came on the ground courtesy of Mixon and Perine.
After a disasterous first 35 minutes, the Mountaineers foufht and clawed their way back to make the game interesting. It is also only the third time Morgantown will play witness to a meeting of two Top 10 programs. Daikiel Shorts Jr. has caught 51 passes for 753 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Shelton Gibson has added 35 catches for 701 yards and 6 touchdowns for West Virginia. The Sooners went the length of the field to score touchdowns after both turnovers.
Howard added a 9-yard scoring run in the early stages of the fourth quarter, and also threw a 37-yard scoring strike to Ka’Ran White to cut the Sooners’ lead down to 41-28 with 10:06 left.
After a WVU punt, the Sooners struck quickly.
Here Oklahoma’s offense, asleep for most of the second half, woke up to drive 65 yards in 11 plays, Mayfield converting two third-down passes before getting in from the one.
Mayfield’s 5-yard pass to Jeffrey Mead made it 21-0, capping a 78-yard, nine-play drive.
West Virginia QB Skyler Howard has thrown five interceptions in his last three games.
By the second quarter, the Sooners were the only ones talking.
There are two other one-loss teams ahead of Oklahoma – No. 4 Clemson and No. 6 Washington. In the end, the Sooners came away victorious, 56-28.
After recording a 3-and-out on the Sooners first possession, the Mountaineers’ special teams returned the ball right back to their guests when Austin Seibert’s punt was muffed by WVU’s Gary Jennings with OU recovering the football at the WVU 34. We didn’t hold our gaps very well. Dede Westbrook had two catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. This has been a miserable year but water usually finds its level and Notre Dame is far better than it has played.
Right after the start of the game, Oklahoma already had one wide-open drop, and players looked to be moving around the turf gingerly, scared of falling. It was a heavily reviewed play because of the pileup in the end zone, but the touchdown and two-point conversion put the Sooners up 49-28. The quarterback tacked on another 1-yard score in the final 27 seconds. This game tonight will mark the first regular season matchup between these two teams with both ranked in the AP Top 15 since 1958 when Oklahoma rolled to a 47-14 win.
