Reus Dortmund comeback king hits hat-trick in Champions League record haul
In what can be called the most entertaining match of the year, Borussia Dortmund scored an astounding 8 goals while Legia Warsaw countered with 4 goals.
Reus, who captained Dortmund, made his return after 185 days out with an adductor injury which sidelined him for June’s European championships.
It surpassed the previous record of 11 when Monaco beat Deportivo La Coruna 8-3 in 2003.
Champions League history was written as Dortmund’s rolled over Legia in the highest-scoring game ever in the competition.
The Dembele-Kagawa connection was in full flow and it yielded another goal just a minute later as Dembele shifted the ball to his left and the Japan global showed great feet to shrug off a defender and smash in.
“We’ve got to defend better than this and I’m particularly sorry for Roman”.
Dortmund, meanwhile, played with a lineup that will never be seen again in a game they knew they would win in 99 out of 100 times.
Reus had not played in a competitive match since the 2016 DFB Cup final in May, but showed no sign of rustiness in a rampant BVB side.
Just the one goal in Zagreb, as Lyon’s sole away goal earned them three points.
Dortmund defender Felix Passlack then scored his first Champions League goal before Hungary striker Nemanja Nikolic netted Warsaw’s fourth in the final ten minutes.
The man himself was naturally delighted with the match, telling Sky (h/t Stefan Buczko for The Yellow Wall): “This is how you would imagine your comeback after such a long time. The game was not so intense that I would have to [substitute] him”, Tuchel added.
“We were dominant from start to finish and I really hadn’t expected us to concede four”.
A penalty from Adrien Silva with 10 minutes to spare looked to have rescued a surprise point for the hosts at Estadio Jose Alvalade after Raphael Varane gave Real Madrid the lead in the first half. Prijovic almost had a hat trick, but hit the crossbar from point-blank range. He would have picked up an assist, had Schurrle scored from his pass, but Pulisic won’t care as his friend Passlack headed home on the rebound.
A small group of Legia supporters made it into the stadium although UEFA had imposed a ban after Polish fans had created disturbances in the match at Real Madrid.
