Bernie Sanders: I could work with Donald Trump on infrastructure, trade
“The Democratic Party has got to make it very clear that it is the party of working people in 50 states in this country, not just in NY and California”, he said then.
“Trade is a good thing, but we need trade policies that work for the American worker and not just for the CEO’s of large multinational corporations”, Sanders said, dodging a direct question of whether he supported Trump’s pledge to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement. Sanders beat Clinton in those states, whose contests were held during a particularly acrimonious phase of the primary, leading some commentators to blame Sanders for the less and compare him to Ralph Nader, the Green Party candidate who spoiled the 2000 election for Democrat Al Gore. For hundreds of years, extraordinarily fearless people have stood up, and some of them have died in the struggle, to end discrimination in America.
He also called on Trump to pull back his recent appointment of Bannon, a Breitbart News executive, as a top White House strategist.
Speaking at George Washington University on Wednesday, former Democratic presidential candidate Sanders sought to allay progressives’ fears over the impending Republican presidency.
Sanders notes that Trump’s promises include no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid (although Paul Ryan is already working on gutting Medicare), pumping one trillion dollars into infrastructure projects, and raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour (although Sanders reiterates he doesn’t think that’s enough and that it should be $15). Critics have accused Mr. Bannon of promoting racist and sexist views via his news site, which is popular among the so-called alt-right. New York Senator Chuck Schumer was elected to serve as the new minority leader, while Sanders was chosen as the chair of “outreach”.
US Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during his rally at the Charleston Civic Center on May 5, 2016 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Sanders said he has a “heavy responsibility to help shape the priorities of the United States government”.
Sanders chided Trump over his position on climate change, which the billionaire real estate mogul has called a hoax invented by the Chinese. There will be no honeymoon for Trump, as Bernie Sanders is now in a position to be a constant pain the neck to Trump every single day through his entire time in office.
“Our job is to hold him accountable”, Sanders said, “and we intend to do that”.
Numerous polls taken before the presidential election showed that Clinton and Trump were deeply unpopular politicians, while Sanders enjoyed very high popularity. “And we will find out soon enough whether what he said was honest”.
“Trump said he wants six weeks of paid maternity leave”, Sanders said, ticking off a list of the president-elect’s most acceptable plans-and the crowd went wild.
