Trump Backs Off Campaign Promises On Climate Change
President-elect Donald Trump met with the New York Times – a publication he has repeatedly lambasted as “failing” – this afternoon in one of his first interviews since winning the election earlier this month. The meetings of Trump are to take place at his home turf where he will be at an advantage.
Here are the highlights of what he eventually had to share.
Trump had sought to eliminate the longer on-the-record meeting; according to Murphy, the Times refused, and then Trump’s camp seemingly agreed to revert to the original understanding. “I wouldn’t think about hiring him”, Trump said.
Instead of striking a harmonious tone to build rapport following the election, Trump was combative, participants said.
– Disavowed white nationalist sympathizers who celebrated his election during a conference in Washington over the weekend.
“Trump on his businesses/conflict q’s: ‘The law’s totally on my side, the president can’t have a conflict of interest'”.
As The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, the Donald J. Trump Foundation admitted to unethical practices in 2015 tax filings discovered on Monday evening by Guidestar, a nonprofit-tracking site.
Participants in the meeting at Trump Tower in NY described it as a contentious but generally respectful gathering. He leveraged what effectively amounted to free advertising for the property by inviting the campaign press core to come cover the grand opening.
A Democratic senator is tabling a resolution calling on him to liquidate his assets to prove he does not intend to profit from the office of president. “There’s never been a case like this”, Trump said.
Good government groups and members of Congress have urged Trump to distance himself from his sprawling global empire to minimize conflict between his businesses, foreign leaders and the government he will oversee.
It’s not clear – and Trump showed just how limited his foreign policy knowledge is when he suggested his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, could help make peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Kushner, who is Jewish, has no experience in politics or worldwide diplomacy.
Critics say Bannon, a former head of the conservative Breitbart News, had made the website a forum for the alt-right, a loose grouping that rejects mainstream politics and includes neo-Nazis, white supremacists and anti-Semites.
Trump has often lashed out at the media over what he deemed was unflattering coverage, a trait that looks unlikely to change when he moves out of Trump Tower and into the White House. “It’s Trump’s opinion, his angle, his team, without allowing anyone from the outside – whether a journalist or the public – to question it”. The paper was aggressively critical of Trump, but recently promised to cover him fairly and “without fear”.
“Paul Ryan, right now, loves me”.
Trump said he did not think his loyal supporters would be disappointed. This is probably not practical; his many partners in real estate deals would surely object, since the buildings would lose value once the Trump name was removed.
The Times responded in a tweet, disputing Trump’s reason for the cancellation. Last week, Trump took a meeting with three Indian businessmen who had worked with the president-elect on a Trump-branded property in Mumbai and were reportedly hoping to continue their working relationship once Trump was in office.
Similarly, on the issue of torture, the president-elect said that he has changed his mind after his meeting with Gen (rtd) James Mattis, whom he is considering to appoint as the Defence Secretary.
Now: “I think there is some connectivity”.
It does not seem like a stretch that providing security to Trump’s wife and child while Barron finishes his school year would be a massive expense. He mocked and imitated a disabled reporter.
