Real Madrid, Leicester into Champions League last 16
Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Club Brugge secured the Premier League champions’ place in the last 16 of Europe’s premier competition, with one game to spare.
With 11 points, the title-holders have a lock on the second place in Group F and a chance to grab the top spot with a win against group leader Germany’s Borussia Dortmund in the final group-stage match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.
Club Brugge’s goal was scored by Jose Izquierdo on 52 minutes.
The game finished 8-4 after a flurry of late strikes – including Reus’ hat-trick goal – and became the highest scoring game in Champions League history. “We must concentrate on the Premier League now”.
Leicester may have their domestic issues – they sit just two points clear of the relegation zone following Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Watford – but playing in Europe clearly inspires them.
“Why not also in the Champions League?”. They will go through as winners of Group G.
First-choice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel remains out after fracturing his hand in their last European game in Denmark earlier this month, while young left-back Ben Chilwell and midfielder Nampalys Mendy are also absent with ankle problems.
Leicester City starting XI: Zieler, Simpson, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs, Mahrez, Drinkwater, King, Albrighton, Okazaki, Vardy. Riyad Mahrez stepped up and made no mistake from 12-yards out, 2-0. To go to their stadium and for them to come here, the occasion would be vast.
After achieving the impossible last season by winning the #Premier League, Leicester City appear to have set their sights on shocking the world again.
Riyad Mahrez has laughed off suggestions that Leicester City are under pressure to advance in the UEFA Champions League, when they host Club Brugge on Tuesday. It’s more than we could have ever imagined.
“But they have very good players and against us today there was a big wall to stop our shots on goal”. We just wanted to maintain our performance.
“We are very close to relegation so we have to play at same level as in the Champions League”.
“We believe in ourselves and want to win every game”. I am very happy and very proud.
On Monday, Ranieri dismissed a suggestion that his players have been distracted by competing in the Champions League.
“It’s a pity we are on zero points, it’s something some people are laughing at and it’s something we want to get rid of soon”, said Brugge striker Jelle Vossen, who used to feature for Middlesbrough and Burnley.
