Major League Baseball Trade deadline: Mets get Cespedes, Yankees do nothing
The Mets are three games back of the first-place Washington Nationals in the NL East.
Cespedes, perhaps the biggest chip remaining on the trade market as the clock was winding down, wound up going to New York minutes before the deadline struck, with the Mets sending minor-league right-handers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa to Detroit. The Mets will only be moving two minor leaguers for Cespedes, as they will be able to hold onto Zack Wheeler, who was the centerpiece of both trade proposals with the Brewers and Reds. He is hitting. 293 with 18 homeruns this season, as indicated by ESPN. No qualified Met has better numbers in any of those categories this year.
The Tigers announced earlier in the week that they would be fielding offers for the two upcoming free agents. But with so much pitching depth, the Mets can afford it.
He’s expected to join New York on Saturday before the Mets game against the Nationals. Give Alderson credit: The Mets were too close to sit tight at the deadline, and most of his moves were aimed at addressing their biggest flaw.
Although the Orioles never quite made it all the way back, falling 9-8 on Thursday night, the spirit they displayed over the final four innings made the defeat far easier for manager Buck Showalter to swallow.
Alfredo Simon, who pitched for the Orioles from 2008-11, didn’t allow a hit for the first three innings.
He has shown he can played under the bright lights of New York City.
The reason for that is still being debated; a few say it was the Mets’ concern over Gomez’s hip, while others speculated that it was because the team wanted Milwaukee to help pay part of Gomez’s contract.
The Mets’ trade for Yoenis Cespedes truly is a holiday for the rest of us! It’s possible Cespedes or right fielder Curtis Granderson could move to center. Anibal Sanchez gets the ball, and he’s 10-8 with a 4.61 ERA and 121 strikeouts this season.
Hamels, who had a limited no-trade clause, vetoed a deal to the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
Orioles: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (5-6, 2.88 ERA) makes his 20th start of the season.
At the moment, the Mets are in the middle of a tightly contested Wild Card and divisional races.
The Tigers led 7-0 in the fourth inning and 9-2 in the sixth before surviving Baltimore’s comeback bid.
“I think it reflects the fact we believe we’re in a position to compete through the rest of the season for a playoff spot and we’re going to do everything we can to ensure that competitive level”, Alderson said. The Sox traded him to Detroit during the off-season. “And the three guys we traded were the three guys that were actively pursued”.
