Trump confirms nomination of Gov. Haley as next U.S. ambassador to UN
After the shooting, she convinced the state Legislature to remove the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina Capitol.
(Updates with confirmation, adds background, detail) Nov 23 (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has picked South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who was critical of him during his election campaign and who has little foreign policy experience, to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Ina statement released Wednesday, Trump insisted Haley is a “proven dealmaker”, PBS reported. All three are white men, and the selection of Ms Haley and Dr Carson is seen as an attempt to achieve greater diversity in the president-elect’s team.
Haley supported Marco Rubio during the Republican primary – at one point, she spoke at a Rubio event and said, “Donald Trump is everything I taught my children not to do in kindergarten”.
As part of the Cabinet, Haley would have more opportunity to shape U.S. policies, rather than simply defend the administration’s positions. After Rubio dropped out, Haley backed Trump opponent Ted Cruz.
Haley, who is Indian-American, is the first woman and the first person of color Trump has selected for his administration.
She would be the first woman in his Cabinet.
Announcing the appointment, Trump said, “She will be a great leader representing us on the world stage”.
She will need to be confirmed by the Senate for the post. In a break with previous Republican administrations, Haley will hold Cabinet rank. Haley denounced several of Trump’s campaign comments and urged voters to “reject the siren call of the angriest voices”.
In a subsequent meeting on the “Today” show on NBC, Haley, the descendant of settlers from India said, “Trump has definitely contributed to what I think is just irresponsible talk”.
We know Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster will be governor, but who will be his successor as new lieutenant governor? “It’s my prayer that on this Thanksgiving we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country strengthened by shared goal and very, very common resolve”.
Haley: “We have someone running for president who instead of bringing [people] back together like we did in SC, he’s telling his supporters to punch a guy in the face!”
DeVos, from MI, told The Associated Press in July, “A lot of the things he has said are very off-putting and concerning”. They say it was the most vicious primary and the most vicious campaign. She will nearly certainly ease fears about lacking diversity in Trump’s administration, which so far has uniformly tapped white men for top presidential nominations and appointments.
“Mr. Trump is well aware of the importance and the critical nature of South Carolina’s role in his election”, he said, as speculation swirled that Trump was considering Haley for a job somewhere in his administration. “We must resist that temptation”, she said.
In this photo taken November 18, 2016, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley speaks in Washington. After Bobby Jindal, she is the second Indian-American Governor.
In January, she took the extraordinary move of criticizing Trump in a nationally televised State of the Union rebuttal. I feel very strongly about illegal immigration.
The South Carolina measure which Haley signed into law a year ago doesn’t specify Israel by name but more generally prevents public entities from contracting with businesses engaging in the “boycott of a person or an entity based in or doing business with a jurisdiction with whom South Carolina can enjoy open trade”. “We will be left in good hands if he takes the helm and leads the state”.
Danon’s accolade led praise of the appointment from diplomats from around the world, even as they grappled to understand what worldwide diplomacy might look like under a Trump administration.
