Wayne State University officer recovering from shooting
This tragic event reminds all of us how precious life is and Officer Rose should be honored.
Rose was patrolling an area a few blocks off campus when he stopped to investigate a man, Wayne State police chief Anthony Holt said. Earlier this month, two police officers in Iowa were fatally shot while sitting in their patrol cars.
The suspect in custody, who was described as a black male with a beard in his 40s, is said to frequent the area of the shooting. Davis, who was previously known to police, was picked up about a half-mile from the scene of the shooting, Holt said.
“We need to speak out in a very loud and bold voice and say, “this will not be tolerated.’ We can not allow anti-police rhetoric to fuel the thoughts in some of these individuals” minds”. He adds that the officer was one of the best canine handlers in the U.S.
Wayne State University Officer Collin Rose, 29, died about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at a hospital, Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody said. Rose named one of his dogs, Wolverine, after Hill, according to Holt. Wayne State police are also sworn Detroit police officers and patrol the area around campus. An officer immediately took Rose to the hospital, where he went into surgery.
Holt said Davis had an incident in 2011 and 2014 with police including a time an officer suffered minor injuries from a scuffle with the suspect.
The Associated Press contributed this report.
“We were not expecting he was going to be able to talk”, Wilson said. Officials had not identified the officer.
Rose began his law enforcement career in his hometown with the Richland Village Police Department and accepted a position with the Wayne State University Police Department approximately five years ago. The area of the shooting had sustained a recent rash of vehicle break-ins.
“It is a community loss (with) all officers, (when) you lose any officer, but he is one that was a true asset to a community”, Mattioli said.
Officer Rose was then hospitalized and rushed into surgery at approximately 8:30 p.m.
A suspect was arrested Tuesday night, but has not been charged. Collin is 29 years old and engaged to be married. Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the officer is in “critical” condition after the shooting Tuesday night near the campus of Wayne State University. But authorities said Wednesday Rose was probably not ambushed.
Rose is listed as a member of the Police Unity Tour, a bike ride from New Jersey to Washington, D.C., that starts every year on May 9.
“The officer was trying to get him to put his arms behind his back.” the woman said.
Angelo L. said he was familiar with Rose, who would regularly speak with and help people in the neighborhood, and that he feels “very, very bad for him”.
Officers who arrived on the scene found the officer injured on the ground. He left a whole life behind him when a random individual shot and killed him while he was on duty Tuesday evening. She had no additional information.
Rose is the third Detroit police officer to die since September.
