Bruce Arena Named Coach To Succeed Jurgen Klinsmann

The US resume their qualification campaign next March with matches against Honduras and Panama.

Arena, 65, offered solutions that were pretty simple but yet had been absent from the team in recent years under Klinsmann.

It was a concern that was misguided in its message – every national team should go after the best eligible players. When asked about Jonathan Bornstein and Benny Feilhaber, Arena said they were two players who could get a look.

On the same conference call, Arena expressed confidence that he would be able to get the usa team back in contention for a berth at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation. “It’s going to take time, patience and a lot of hard work”.

According to the Washington Post, Klinsmann’s base salary in 2014 was $2.5 million, with the amount increasing in each year of his five-year deal (signed in December, 2013).

“That’s a positive”, Gulati said. “I think he’s got far more experience than he did when he had the national team the first go-round”.

And Arena says he is grateful to have been appointed into the role for a second time.

A three-time MLS coach of the year victor, Arena was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2010 and five years later was named the recipient of the prestigious Werner Fricker Builder Award – the highest honour an individual can receive from the US Soccer Federation.

But Bradley noted the US must move quickly to embrace Arena, who handed the midfielder his first two caps as a 19-year-old in 2006.

“I don’t view this as Bruce 2, but (instead) Bruce 2.0”, Gulati said. He signed with the Galaxy in 2008 and claimed three MLS Cups and two Supporters’ Shields while winning league coach of the year in 2009 and 2011.

Under his management of the senior side, U.S. made a surprise run to the World Cup quarter-finals in Korea and Japan in 2002, beating Portugal 3-2 in their opening match and defeating Mexico 2-0 in the last-16.

“Really starting at the Gold Cup, we’ve had some very up-and-down results”, Gulati said.

But Klinsmann, who has always had his detractors, found himself in an untenable position after the team lost two World Cup qualifiers this month in the space of five days. The U.S.is at the bottom of the six-team CONCACAF group on goal differential.

“If i made those comments, I certainly don’t believe that that’s my attitude”, Arena said. He even doubled down on the idea by importing as many German-Americans as he could find, ruffling plenty of feathers in both the squad and the US federation.
