Reality will force Trump to adjust his approach: Barack Obama
President Barack Obama said he won’t hold back from criticizing Donald Trump if the soon-to-be-president does anything to threaten the “values or ideals” of America, saying he would step in if “necessary or helpful to defend those ideals”.
This isn’t to say that Obama has necessarily reciprocated Trump’s glowing appraisal of their meeting.
At his last scheduled worldwide news conference following an APEC summit in Lima, Peru, Sunday, a reporter asked Obama if he will speak out if he sees Donald Trump undoing numerous policies that defined the Obama White House.
Obama’s remarks came as he concluded his final world tour as President.
“There’s nobody to fill the void. There really isn’t”, he said.
Obama said he was “very clear about the strong differences we had on policy”. Pointing to the example of the Paris Climate Agreement saying, “China’s not the one who was going around organizing 200 nations to sign on”. And I think they realize that being president of the United States is a serious job. Mr. Duterte had formal talks with President Xi Jinping of China and President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Obama said an increasingly borderless world has brought “historic gains in prosperity, education and health”, but acknowledged globalization had both winners and losers.
The selections so far suggest that Mr Trump, true to his campaign promises, intends to steer national security and foreign policy in a sharply different direction from that of President Obama, whose record Mr Trump harshly criticised during his campaign.
“We talked about some of the organizational issues in setting up the White House. The good news is that’s something we have control over”. And the Peruvian president said the close polls in that state, as well as Pennsylvania, was an indication to him that Clinton could lose.
Trump will take over the office of president on January 20 officially completing the transition from one president to the next.
Obama has called for Democratic party loyalists from all over the country to become active but avoid “micro-targeting,” according to Politico.
In about two months, the USA government will officially complete its transition from one president to the next.
Obama encouraged congressional Democrats not to follow in the footsteps of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who made it his mission to resist Obama at every turn.
