Schumer hints of compromise with Trump, but not on ObamaCare
Trump’s hard-right campaign pledges, such as a temporary ban on Muslim immigration to the US and the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, likely influenced Democrats’ embrace of obstructionism.
The clearest signs emerged over the weekend.
In normal circumstances, a minority president might take it as a strong suggestion to tread carefully – not just to “reach out” to the other party by appointing one or two of its members to his Cabinet or by inviting its congressional leadership over for dinner, but to govern with an awareness that most Americans still need to be convinced that his presidency will be something other than a disaster.
In 2008, when Barack Obama was elected president, he received more votes than any candidate in USA history. “But I really didn’t know him very well”. Harry Reid as the chamber’s top Senate Democrat. But he expressed support for “dramatic change” in trade laws and for closing loopholes in the tax code, ambitions that may align with Trump’s.
“My test is the specifics. And we will work with him on those issues”, schumer said. “We never went golfing together, even had a meal together”, Schumer said in an interview with Politico published Saturday.
Along with Marcellino’s race, one other Long Island district remains undecided, with Democratic challenger John Brooks maintaining a 33-vote lead over incumbent Republican Michael Venditto.
But there was another word that Trump did not mention in his remarks that might be even more telling about his agenda. Sanders promised to stand up to bigotry, sexism and homophobia, plus draw attention to Trump policies that hurt working people: “We are going to hold (him) to account”.
The Democratic Party should put its energy and money into connecting with potential voters at the grass-roots level. NY magazine writer Jonathan Chait noted that all three hires are animated by “an intensified and narrow nationalism” and a desire to “preserve white Christian American identity”. Three of them (Johnson-WI, Burr-NC, and Rubio-FL) actually won more votes than Trump (Pat Toomey, in PA, came less than 25,000 votes short of Trump).
Democrats from those three states likely will hold 66 seats out of at least 193 that the party will claim next year in the House, with several races still undecided. This is a repudiation of the policies of President Obama and his party over the last eight years, but only blinding rose colored glasses does not allow certain segments to see that stark fact.
Cruz, who is the first Hispanic woman to lead the House Democrats, outlined a number of issues where Democrats will make a stand, ranging from protecting the environment to supporting public schools to opposing discrimination. Democrats need a hopeful but realistic message recognizing that while most big cities prosper in today’s globalized economy, much of the rest of the country suffers. So I hope that President Trump will rise to the occasion and, when he does, we’ll try to be supportive.
“I have always had a good relationship with Chuck Schumer”.
As long as Democrats continue to believe that they are smarter, more moral, and know how better to live people’s lives than the people themselves, they will continue to lose ground across the country, as the American people are exhausted of being told what to think and why. They’re more anxious about the Muslim-immigrant registry being floated by one of Trump’s advisers and the threat to deport millions of undocumented people. As the Washington Post noted, “the impressive political operation that Obama built does not appear transferable to other Democrats, and therefore may not live on past his presidency”.
“It shows the state is trending”, said Rob Gleason, chairman of Pennsylvania’s Republican Party.
Some Democrats fume that the strategy worked.
The Republican role on health care seems particularly risky to some in the party. Republicans extended their domination of governorships and state legislatures. President you have two choices: Work with us and you will have to alienate your Republican colleagues, or break your promises to blue-collar America, ‘ ” he said.
