Even in victory, Trump’s Electoral College concerns remain
Clinton was only the fifth presidential candidate to win the popular vote and lose the election.
“I think when the president-elect … tells you before he’s even inaugurated that he doesn’t wish to pursue these charges, it sends a very strong message” to congressional Republicans, Conway said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”.
But now the President-elect said he won’t push for prosecution of his former rival, telling The New York Times that she has “suffered greatly”. When asked how supporters would respond if he decided against an investigation, Trump answered, “I don’t think they will be disappointed”.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Clinton leads Trump by 1.82 million votes, 63,964,956 to 62,139,188, according to preliminary figures.
He recently told New York Times that the idea of prosecuting Clinton is “just not something I feel very strongly about”.
The FBI closed the investigation into Clinton’s emails after finding her not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing.
After Trump won in 2016, however, he called it “actually genius”, then reversed course again in a Tuesday meeting with the New York Times, reportedly saying he would “rather do the popular vote”. Would more Clinton voters going to the polls, instead of staying home (assuming the polls were right and the election was “in the bag”) have meant we would be about to welcome America’s first female president?
A petition calling on the electors to pick Clinton when they vote in December has received over 4.5 million signatures.
But in the days since being elected president, Mr. Trump has backed down from that position.
“Our country needs a thorough, public congressional investigation into the role that foreign powers played in the months leading up to November”, said an open letter from a number of professors across the country specializing in cybersecurity.
The real-estate mogul from NY also indicated that he could appoint his son-in-law Jared Kushner a special envoy charged with brokering peace in the Middle East.
At least one commenter removed “deplorable”-a nickname Trump supporters gave themselves after Clinton called half of Trump’s base a “basket of deplorables”-from his screen name and replaced it with “ExTrumpVoter”.
