Trump win could give Israel freer hand with Palestinians
As the July report of the Quartet points out, action is needed to preserve the possibility of achieving this goal that is commonly shared, at least formally. Israel, the United States and all other interested parties have long bought into the two-state solution as the only just and equitable pathway to peace. If passed, this would be the first time the Knesset approves a law relevant only to the West Bank, an area outside of its jurisdiction.
Over his two terms, during which time thousands of innocent people – the vast majority of whom were Palestinians – were killed in Gaza and the West Bank, Obama purportedly worked to build a “middle ground”.
Elusive as it is, this prescription must remain the North Star of Middle East diplomacy. Trump has accused Obama of putting undue pressure on Israel. There is an global consensus on this because the report is the result of common work we have done. So these statements that we have in the Quartet report presented in July are statements that we share with our friends in the global community. Trump said that he would “like to turn it around”. They are considered illegal by global law.
Palestinians say the rise in knife attacks on Israeli soldiers is rooted in frustration stemming from almost five decades of Israeli military occupation.
“It is clear we are in a transition period, it is clear today – not only in Israel but in the world – we are waiting for new policies, a new administration”. Though we opposed the deal previous year, in part because it allows Iran to continue its support of terrorism, the fact is that it’s working for now. “But Breitbart really is a news organization that has become quite successful”. It read: I would like to inform you that by the directive of the prime minister, the ministers and deputy ministers are required to not make any contact with the incoming USA administration, other than through the Prime Minister’s Office or the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
Speaking to Israel’s Channel Two last week, Jerusalem Vice Mayor Meir Turgeman said: “There are a lot more plans, and I intend to use the USA transition period to get them approved”. Indicates formal role unlikely but he could be a player on Mideast peace. “I have reason to believe I can do that”.
Until the Palestinian leadership can recognize and accept a Jewish state in the land of Israel, the United States must continue working to prevent global recognition of a Palestinian state.
In a related development on Wednesday, two Palestinian prisoners – Ahmad Abu Fara, 29, and Anas Shadid, 19 – entered their 60th day on hunger strike to protest their ongoing “administrative detention” in Israeli jails, according to the same NGO.
So let me conclude on a more personal note. Far more significant than the inflammatory drivel of Gingrich and Giuliani, Palestinian division and their inability to confront the Israeli occupation with one unified and daring strategy is Palestine’s greatest, and most pressing challenge. The outcome of his policies were quite devastating, whereas he sold Palestinians false hope, he granted Israel most of its needs of military funding and technology, shielding it from global censure, too. And yet it showed that hope is still alive.
After their first meeting, with cameras broadcasting their every word across the globe, President Obama turned to Donald Trump and pledged ” to do everything we can to help you succeed”.
