Trump aide Kellyanne Conway: No plan to pursue charges against Clinton
A new election tally shows that Hillary Clinton is leading President-elect Donald Trump by 2 million votes as of November 23, more than two weeks after Election Day. On that technical point I was right, but in a practical sense it didn’t matter.
For example, when 2000 Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore contested the results of election against George W. Bush, the S&P 500 fell 8.4% between election day that year, and December 15, the day after Gore conceded following a Supreme Court ruling that ended the recount in Florida. “Our nation is totally divided!”
“I think it would be very divisive for the country”, he said. Donald Trump ran on a campaign that called the system rigged in favor of Hillary, and now he wins, he isn’t going to make sure she is locked up?
Whether or not it’s “genius” (Trump himself previously called the college a “disaster for democracy”), the US electoral system can’t be overturned retroactively, making Trump’s win a fact of life that Democrats must deal with.
“Nowhere else on Earth can someone win the popular vote and lose the election”, he said.
Trump has received mixed responses following his statement to the New York Times Tuesday that he may not pursue a Clinton investigation, but could this be another deflationary move by the President-elect?
“But I think for him to interfere and say to the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the IRS or the Justice Department, ‘You should not pay attention to law-breaking, ‘ that would be a tremendous blow to the rule of law”. It also plays down the relevance of votes in states that lean Republican or Democrat.
Is it possible to eliminate the Electoral College without amending the Constitution? But this is a different system. You’d stay in NY and you’d stay in California. “I have tremendous respect”.
“I don’t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don’t”, Trump said in the interview. That’s the largest lead for a losing candidate since 1876, and gives her a larger margin of victory than five presidents who actually won the Electoral College vote. Because slaves weren’t counted as people, these southern states rightly feared northern control over the process if direct elections were allowed. However, each state is allocated a number of electors supposedly in proportion to the population of that state.
There’s no way Congress would pass a constitutional amendment for direct popular election, nor would 38 states ratify one if it did pass.
Trump went on to joke, “I was never a fan of the Electoral College until now”. But so far, no one has been convicted and prosecuted. The law would guarantee the presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes nationwide.
Clinton beat Trump in California by about 2.5 million votes.
