Paul Ryan Unanimously Re-nominated As House Speaker
Ahead of the vote, Ryan highlighted party unity.
He must now win a floor vote of all 435 House members.
“Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government”, he said to reporters Tuesday morning. Some also complained that Ryan had not articulated his vision for how he would work with Trump during a candidate forum on Monday.
Ryan refused to answer directly when Congress would go along with Trump’s plan to spend $1 trillion on infrastructure.
PAUL RYAN: Donald Trump is a multibillionaire successful businessman who has been so successful because he’s surrounded himself with good people. “He’s done a good job in Congress”.
Coming after a campaign full of public GOP infighting and clashes between Ryan and Trump, the declaration of support was “a validating moment”, said Lummis.
UNIDENTIFIED CROWD: (Chanting) Paul Ryan sucks. President George W. Bush’s vaunted “No Child Left Behind Act”, sent to the House in January 2001 and rushed though both houses with little real consideration, turned out to be a law widely panned by educators and many Republicans as costly and unworkable.
Voters chose President-elect Donald Trump in part because of his pledge to “drain the swamp” of Washington corruption, and restoring earmarks so soon “would have been a bad look”, Simpson said. Yet as one senior aide to a member of the House Freedom Caucus explained, “Many members of the Freedom Caucus never opposed Ryan’s positions on trade and immigration the way their constituents do”. The fact of the matter is that Trump and Ryan are going to need each other, and in all likelihood they’re going to agree a lot more than they disagree. Today Meadow’s scoffs at all that. There was heated back and forth over the issue.
CHANG: Let bygones be bygones, Meadows says.
In a poll, the Politico Caucus found that 65 percent of GOP insiders want Ryan to lead the agenda while only 35 percent want Trump to decide policy, Politico reports. Ryan says there’s still plenty of overlap.
If they can get past it to get things done, surely you can too. This is something we share. “I’m very excited about our ability to work together”. At least Tom Cole of Oklahoma is.
Republicans lost only a half-dozen seats in the House and just two in the Senate, far fewer than forecast.
I think this is probably going to go like every Paul Ryan post. If we don’t, we won’t.
On the Democratic side, House Democrats postponed leadership elections that had been scheduled for Thursday until November 30 amid signs of dissatisfaction with their veteran leaders.
“So, we’ve probably got as strong a relationship with an incoming administration as any certainly Republican conference, maybe Democratic conference, has had in a long time”, Cole said.
