McCarthy on Michael: ‘I love his running style’
The Packers have one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.
“We went back and I showed the guys a play today, with five minutes left in the third quarter, they went for it on fourth-and-one at midfield and got it”, Barry said on Thursday.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported McCarthy and Rodgers have a strained relationship, but the signal-caller squashed those rumors in decisive fashion Wednesday, per Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Don’t waste your time reading crap like that”.
The Packers visit the Washington Redskins for the NFL’s weekly Sunday night game in their next outing.
While responsibility in those two areas clearly lies with the head coach, Rodgers has said nothing that directly lays blame on McCarthy or Thompson.
Listen for WTMJ’s coverage of Sunday night’s game beginning at 5:00 P.M. on 620 WTMJ with Packers Preview. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been as sharp, and it’s been a contributing factor to Green Bay’s 4-5 record. With Rodgers, is throwing the football repeatedly the way to go? Mike McCarthy needs to get Rodgers to step up, find a running back that can get a few positive drives per game, and get more out of their defense.
“We’re in this thing all together”, Clinton-Dix said in the Green Bay locker room on Monday. Green Bay’s front office traded for Kansas City Chiefs running back Knile Davis back in October only to waive him a couple weeks later.
Ailed by injuries, the 4-5 Packers have yet to establish a real identity this season. The Pack had lost two in a row before that battle, while Washington had won four straight.
Washington now holds the sixth and final postseason spot in the NFC, having picked up where they left off past year when they won the NFC East. You’ve just got to stay true to who you are, continue to grind and not panic and freak out.
Earlier on Wednesday, Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian said on SportsCenter that McCarthy was doing “the best he can with a very, very short deck” in terms of players. The Packers won’t be able to win any more Super Bowls with the same coaching staff and management. Maybe he thought Cobb was going to keep going, but the receiver had clearly stopped before Rodgers had thrown the ball. Michael added 20 catches for just 96 yards (4.8 average) and another touchdown. Starting to resemble his old self more and more, he will need players like James Starks to carry the ball more, easing the pressure off the passing attack.
