Tolzien didn’t have much of a window to aim at in the end zone and this could have easily been an interception by the former Green Bay Packers backup.
Those weren’t the most interesting numbers to the Steelers (6-5), though.
The Steelers are an 8-point favorite, according to Vegas Insider. “He is young and has a long career ahead of himself”, Roethlisberger said regarding Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck’s status.
A week later, Tolzien made his first start with similar results. On each of those, they refused to give Vontae Davis any help and it led to Antonio Brown burning him for two of their three first half touchdowns (Brown would ice the game with a third TD in the fourth quarter). Still, the Colts could have lived with that had they been able to take advantage of scoring chances.
They’ve won the past three in the series, the past two by a combined score of 96-44.
He adjusted quickly, completing 24 of 39 passes for 280 yards and one touchdown. Running back Le’Veon Bell ran for over 100 yards for the first time since Week 4, and is a sure bet to run for over 100 again.
Now, the Colts will probably face an old nemesis, Pittsburgh (5-5), without their star quarterback.
Antonio Brown is probably not going to get a lot of assistance from the rest of this ragtag group of wide receivers, but he should still get his opportunities, as he always does.
The Colts also ruled out starting safety Clayton Geathers (concussion) for Thursday’s game. Indy is 35-21 in prime-time games since 2004, but 3-9 in last 12 night games, with four straight prime-time losses. It changed dramatically, because it’s nearly impossible for a player to enter the concussion protocol on a Monday and be cleared in time to play a game on a Thursday. Going from Luck to Scott Tolzien is sure to downgrade any receiver, including the banged-up Moncrief.
If the Colts are forced to play from behind, that means they will abandon the ground game and look to air it out. Harrison and Reggie Wayne are only other Colts to achieve feat. He’s been on the practice squad since. But the main issue may not be the Steelers defense, it’s the lack of chemistry he will have with the offensive unit.
