Retailers open for the Thanksgiving
But more and more, these two big drivers of the industry don’t mix inside stores – a dynamic that is reshaping one the country’s biggest shopping days.
JCPenney will begin its Black Friday sale at 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, and will stay open Friday until 10 p.m. Online sale prices begin a day earlier, at midnight November 23.
It seems unusual that after an annual day of thanksgiving, celebrating the bonds of family and friends, Americans flock to shopping malls on the most commercial, materialistic day of the year: Black Friday.
A survey for BHS.com found 21% of shoppers planned to spend more this year than last year, and just 9% meant to spend less.
E-commerce sales are predicted to continue to grow at a faster rate than “bricks and mortar” store sales representing 36 per cent of holiday sales, up from 34 per cent past year.
Many Americans skip the Thanksgiving turkey and head straight to the Black Friday sales.
An increasing emphasis on online, mobile and now even voice shopping, spearheaded by Amazon and other online retailers, has led to digital commerce beginning to overtake the in-store scramble that has characterized Black Friday for so long. While this may not be such a big deal, there have been numerous deaths and injuries linked to Black Friday shopping crowds.
Whatever numbers the retail association posts this weekend for Black Friday (typically overoptimistic assessments) are likely to be skewed this year even more. “They’re starting to back it up”.
10 p.m.to midnight. Many malls and specialty stores will open. Take a little extra time and find a set that wows the whole family. This includes 50% off hunreds of games, $15 – 35 games. For clothing, discounts are on average of 40 percent over the Thanksgiving weekend, but at the end of the season, they go to 70 percent.
“We are encouraging all of our businesses to pass out information about what it does to the local economy when people buy from local companies”, Aila Karpio of the Point Grey Village Business Improvement Association told the Straight by phone. Ironically the company, owned by USA retail giant, Walmart famously brought the Black Friday to the attention of British retailers.
There are still a few larger retailers that will offer certain exclusive in-store doorbusters, including Best Buy.
5 p.m. Best Buy and Toys R Us open.
It’s a reminder with any Black Friday promotion to make sure you understand any catches, so you are not left out in the cold when those doors open. (Not all partners are actually closing their doors.) This year’s catchphrase: “Will you go OUT with me?” Still, that can be a challenge, she said, as “you pretty much have to be first in line for those, and you have to know the layout of the store and the exact location of the item you are looking for in order to outrace other shoppers”.
Target: Thursday 6 p.m. through Friday 11 p.m. Walmart is open through the day, as is Kmart, but deals start at preset times.
As Time reported, the Black Friday phenomenon has been part of American culture in some way “a$3 s early as the 19 century”. “Consumer fundamentals are strong and retail sales have been healthy this fall”. This year, it falls on Sunday.
“It’s been a bad year for the Bears and Notre Dame”, Wahlman said.
