Clemson, Washington, Michigan fall
With only two games remaining, ‘Bama seems primed for another College Football Playoff appearance, in their quest to be back to back champions. MI was slotted at No. 3, Clemson at No. 4, while Louisville and Washington were placed at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. 3 (Clemson) and 4 (Washington) ranked teams in the AP Top 25 all lost on the same day for the first time since 1985 last Saturday.
And the biggest surprise was still to come.
Ohio State moved into Michigan’s former spot at No. 2 followed by Louisville, who replaced Clemson after the Tigers’ shocking loss to Pittsburgh.
Here are my College Football Playoff predictions following Week 11 of the 2016 College Football Season. No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 MI, and No. 4 Clemson each has one loss, and each also has a played a schedule that is ranked in the top 30 in the nation.
On the heels of the biggest weekend of upsets in 31 years, in which three undefeated, top-four teams lost, the committee kept two of those teams – MI and Clemson – in its top four.
Then again, with any more weeks like this one, assuming anything is a risky proposition at best.
Louisville has the biggest argument against the most recent poll since they were unable to move past MI and Clemson despite their losses last weekend.
Meanwhile the darkhorses outside of the top four both come from the Big Ten. The only team that could have an argument to jump in would be Louisville, but the Tigers beat them head-to-head and I think that means a lot. The Jayhawks still lost their 19th straight Big 12 game and first-year Iowa State coach Matt Campbell got his first conference victory after a bunch of near misses.
With the win, the Cougars increased their winning streak to eight games, moving to 8-2 overall and 7-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time in school history. The Trojans (8-1) won a matchup of unbeaten Sun Belt Conference teams on Saturday against Appalachian State and their only loss was by six points at Clemson.
Clemson, Michigan and Washington – the Nos.
Since Michigan and Ohio State will play each other this month, there is little chance that the rankings will remain static at the end of the season.
Among Group of 5 programs, Boise State moved up to No. 20, just ahead of undefeated Western Michigan at No. 21. The Mountaineers need some help to win the Big 12 but Saturday went a long way to help WVU achieve the impossible.
Oklahoma State is up to No. 11, and West Virginia, the Sooners’ opponent this weekend in Morgantown, is at No. 14.
