Jeff Fisher on Jared Goff’s debut: ‘You could see the light’
L.A. Rams vs Miami Dolphins. Los Angeles’ defense also dropped a potential interception.
Jared Goff’s first regular-season play: a false start.
The genuine excitement from his bench after he dives for the new set of downs is noticeable. He didn’t catch it but he knocked it over the end line, and the Rams fell to 4-6 with a 14-10 loss that was both live and Memorex.
Tannehill led the Dolphins with two touchdowns and 172 yards passing.
Down 14-0 in the fourth quarter, Tannehill led the Dolphins on two consecutive touchdown drives as Miami came back to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 14-10.
“I’m obviously very disappointed with the result and how things turned out”, said Goff. “We weren’t able to do that”.
“He was doing what he’s done for his whole life, which is run the ball well”, Goff said. With the win today and the bye week of the Denver Broncos, Miami moves one game behind the Broncos and one game behind the Chiefs who lost to Tampa Bay earlier in the afternoon.
Fisher, who in the preseason said he would no longer tolerate that “7-9 bulls–“, now finds his 2016 Rams at 4-6.
As if it wasn’t arduous enough playing without Albert and Pouncey, Tunsil went out with a shoulder injury just before halftime.
And that’s sort of the problem. All but three of his completions in that stretch went for at least eight yards.
That’s not on Goff. On the plays that make or break National Football League quarterbacks, it became obvious he’s not ready.
And it probably wouldn’t look much different of the quarterback was Carson Wentz, the No. 2 pick in the draft, or Dak Prescott, taken by Dallas in the fourth round at No. 135.
Goff’s performance was far from overwhelming, but his lack of touchdowns is one thing that coach Jeff Fisher and the Rams conservative offense can definitely be encouraged by.
The Rams held Jay Ajayi to only 77 yards rushing, while his Los Angeles counterpart Todd Gurley had only 76.
Goff went 17 of 31 for 134 yards in a quiet debut by the NFL’s No. 1 pick in the Rams’ 10th game of the season.
How did it work out?
Early in the first quarter, Gurley capped off a four-play, 68-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown run.
Goff completed the first pass of his career on the ensuing drive to tight end Tyler Higbee for three yards.
Asked about the ongoing culture shift in Davie, Gase said, “I can’t speak about the past”. “We kept fighting, but those last six minutes, I think it’s going to haunt us”. “It’s hard to praise any one of your players in a loss like this, but when all eyes were on our quarterback, I thought he handled this game pretty well”.
Greg Zuerlein missed a 48-yard field goal attempt right before the Dolphins scored their first TD.
Offensively, wide receiver DeVante Parker was the key to this victory, registering 8 catches for 79 and the game-winning touchdown. That score brought Miami within a field goal.
It’s true, but also absurd in a way.
The Rams (4-6) entered the game as the NFL’s lowest scoring team with just 15.4 points per game.
That doesn’t excuse everything.
Rams defensive end Robert Quinn, who started the week in the hospital, not only played Sunday but started and recorded a sack late in the second half.
Hall of famer Troy Aikman lost to the New Orleans Saints 28-0 in his first start; throwing for 180 yards and two interceptions. “We had a ton of respect coming into this game and I think we leave with a ton of respect as well”. Unlike many Dolphin fans, we remain unenthused about the playoffs, simply because, in our opinion, even if Miami manages to slip into the postseason somehow, they would have to play on the road against the top seeded team in the conference.
