Ohio State rises after wild weekend in NCAA 1-128 Re-Rank
After watching the Nos. There are a couple of things, though, to keep our eye on as we move forward.
After debuting at No. 9 in the initial set of CFP rankings November 1 and remaining idle last week, Auburn now stands at No. 15 nationally.
If Louisville and Clemson win out (they can not meet in the ACC championship), I say that they will both make the playoff as one loss teams. Louisville has one more game in ACC play, but it’s against lowly Wake Forest. Florida State 18. Nebraska 19.
After three of the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings lost over the weekend, this week’s rankings were pretty widely anticipated. The Huskies would likely pass Louisville with Washington State still on their schedule and an expected Pac-12 title game matchup with either Utah or Colorado. “[It was the] toughest week yet to try to figure it all out”, said College Football Gametime host Chris Goforth, who added Ohio State to his playoff four and dropped Washington. The Big 10 is projected to have five schools ranked, with four in the top 10.
Last week: Beat Mississippi State 51-3. And the outlook has shifted to such an extent in the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 that the committee could confront the most hard decisions it has faced in the three years of the CFP. In 2014, the Power Five conference champions held all of the top five spots in the committee’s final rankings.
The two semifinal bowl locations this season are the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. Even then Louisville might have to make a case against a Wisconsin team with a Big Ten championship and a victory against 16th-ranked LSU.
If Clemson loses the ACC Championship game. Penn State’s resume is smudged by a Week 2 loss to Pittsburgh.
Head coach James Franklin’s team was ranked No. 9 and No. 10 in this week’s Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls, respectively, on Sunday. Some of the teams at the top of the rankings who lost may not be totally done yet. Jim Harbaugh’s squad fell to Iowa 14-13 this past weekend. Ohio State, who won 62-3, vaulted up to #2 because of the losses. The problem, of course, is the Sooners lost both of those games and at that point the head-to-head comparison with Ohio State might hurt them.
As chaos took over college football on Saturday, Penn State escaped disaster – and the Nittany Lions have been rewarded. There is not another path for the Wolverines.
Texas A&M (7-3) continues its fall after losing to MS on Saturday, tumbling 13 spots to No. 23 after a 6-0 start. MI 9-1 1323 2 5.
