Chris Woakes could be rested for England’s second Test against India
After an even contest in the first Test, both teams shift their focus to Vishakhapatnam for the second Test. India’s spin attack will be under pressure to deliver in the second Test against an England side high on confidence after a solid performance in the first Test.
Cook, who has been captain for four years, also brushed off worries Bayliss could be tempted by any offer to coach his home country after Australia’s innings defeat by South Africa in Hobart that represented their fifth successive Test loss.
“Catch the ball”, exclaimed India skipper Virat Kohli when asked how his team could have a shot at the match. It was a strong statement from the tourists after a poor showing against Bangladesh last month. In Test cricket if you don’t take your chances then the game is very hard to pull back.
“My biggest challenge was to not think too much about the situation that I was in”, Kohli said.
“We need to catch well”. We will have our team meeting in the evening and will make the final decisions then.
“It depends on the situation”.
‘In a series where you’re playing against a top side, there’s a lot less room for grooming people, ‘ he said.
“He hasn’t got miles in his legs though and you are weighing that up against seamers who have been with us all winter and Woakes as well”. But you can expect some surprise selections as well, he added.
England’s raw spin trio of Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Zafar Ansari shared 13 wickets between them to force the mighty Indians on the backfoot in the drawn first Test in Rajkot.
“Everyone is telling us it will turn more and more and the toss is important but if we lose the toss it’s another challenge to overcome”, Cook said.
“Chris is one we’re looking at, with the amount of overs he has bowled over the last six weeks”. When he is fit, he comes back into the side, we are going to start with him. That was the whole idea behind it.
The Indian batsman, in particular Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay looked in good touch as seen by their centuries in the first innings while the team management will know if the players such as Ajinkya Rahane and skipper Virat Kohli are yet to fire. Vishakhapatnam might be a different track altogether and that can be a huge factor because Rajkot wasn’t a rank turner by any means and maybe that’s what played a crucial role in the game shaping the way it did.
For India, Rajkot was flat in more ways than one. “Vizag’s pitch assists the spinners a lot and there is also something in it for the pacers early on”. The last ODI played here saw New Zealand bowled out for 79, with Mishra taking 5 for 18, while Assam were dismissed for 69 in a Ranji Trophy match, also in October – although that was a different strip and down to variable bounce rather than spin.
