While Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton did not campaign in West Virginia during the election, both appeared there during that state’s presidential primary. And, there’s been some talk of electors casting protest votes. “The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately”.
Turnout was low in solidly Democratic or Republican states such as New York, California, Texas and Oklahoma compared to more competitive states.
Clinton’s Electoral College loss, but popular vote win, marks the second time such a split has happened in modern history. In Wisconsin, it’s ten. To date the 11 states account for 165 electoral votes, so we have a way to go. It is a republic, for the excellent reason that the nation’s founders understood the danger in pure democracy.
After Election Day this year, Trump tweeted: “The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. So in our case, it’ll be the Republican slate of electors voting to support Donald Trump”, Canon says.
They believe that if they can recruit enough electoral college members to refuse to vote according to the state-by-state results, they can raise significant questions about the college itself. This method means a candidate can get the most popular votes nationwide but still lose the election. Trump took the lead with 60 electors thus beating Clinton.
There have been no faithless electors since 2004, and not since 1912 has more than one elector gone rogue. He also said he was “never a fan of the Electoral College”, adding, “until now”.
In a bid to stop Trump, six electors have signed an agreement and are now trying to convince others to do the same. What other states rights will this decision effect?
