Pep Guardiola confirms Kompany injury blow
The Spaniard’s side will finish second in Group C, meaning they will avoid Bayern and, possibly, Real Madrid when the draw for the last 16 is made on 12 December.
Vincent Kompany has been ruled out for the rest of the year with medial ligament damage to his right knee as the City captain’s injury nightmare took another turn for the worse, a scenario that leaves Guardiola with only two fit, recognised central defenders in John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi going into a crucial phase of the season.
“I’m so satisfied from all the games and of course I was a manager here in Germany and know how hard they [Monchengladbach] are to beat, but we did it”.
One minute later, City found an equaliser through Silva, who nudged the ball home from close range after De Bruyne fizzed the ball across goal after darting towards the byline.
Silva levelled just before the interval but the second half proved a disjointed affair after Lars Stindl for the hosts and Fernandinho for City were both sent off for second bookable offences.
His players pressed high in the Gladbach half and controlled possession but the Germans, without a win in their last six league matches, remained disciplined.
Manchester City have won eight and lost one of their last 14 contests with Burnley in all competitions (W8 D5 L1), netting 37 goals in the process (2.6 per game).
“It was always about the result. It’s a massive game and hopefully we can get some points from that”, winger and Iceland global Johann Gudmundsson said. “We are going to wait for the draw and we are going to see”. “Even before they scored I think they just wanted to defend”.
Pep Guardiola’s side have been inconsistent while juggling European and domestic demands, dropping points in each of their last three home league matches and falling to third place in the table as a result.
“We were a bit passive at 0-0”, City midfielder Ilkay Guendogan said.
“We can not forget they beat Liverpool, they lost in 93rd minute against Arsenal and they draw in Old Trafford”, he said.
His side are enjoying playing away from home better than at the Etihad at the moment.
The majority of first-half chances fell to Gladbach, while Sergio Aguero was left frustrated and isolated up front until the final 10 minutes of the game.
Not for the first time this season, City boss Pep Guardiola reverted to a 3-2-4-1 formation created to take control of central areas, but it did not have the desired effect initially as Gladbach – without a win in the Bundesliga since September – took a deserved 23rd-minute lead through Raffael.
Monchengladbach went into the game in poor form and coach Andre Schubert was pleased with the eventual outcome and a place in the Europa League.
