Bruce Arena replaces Jurgen Klinsmann as US coach
With the Galaxy, Arena reached the MLS Western Conference semifinals seven times in eight full seasons, winning three MLS Cups. “I hate to say this now to Sunil: I would’ve done this for free”.
I was a thousand percent convinced we were gonna qualify for Russian Federation 2018 after those two losses.
What Klinsmann left behind, though, is a team with no discernible style that is even less American – measured by home-grown-or-developed players – and hardly more competitive than the one he inherited. I just wish them the best of luck. This seemingly brought an end to the Klinsmann era after 5 ½ years.
“That’s a positive”, Gulati said.
“I have great passion for this national team and I expect the same out of our players”. He’s accumulated more than a decade of Major League Soccer experience, which could prove useful.
A three-time MLS coach of the year victor, Arena was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2010 and five years later was named the recipient of the prestigious Werner Fricker Builder Award – the highest honour an individual can receive from the US Soccer Federation.
With the Americans now lying bottom of the table, Arena, who led the U.S. team to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, has been called to try and change the team’s fortunes. “Winning World Cups is hard, as you know, there are only a few countries that have won, but I think the United States is getting closer to that day”.
The squad posted a record of 55 wins, 27 draws and 16 defeats under the former German worldwide, who was named coach in July 2011. He said he is better prepared for the job after 10 years in MLS, that he can “see things more quickly and clearly” than before.
U.S. Soccer formally announced Bruce Arena’s return as national coach Tuesday.
The Americans are now in last place in the six-team regional World Cup qualifying group, known as CONCACAF, which also includes Honduras, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago.
“We’ll develop an identity over the next couple of months and hopefully feel comfortable working with each other, and understand that the goal we have is important for the entire group”.
“A very, very special thank you, I want to say, to all of the players”, Klinsmann said.
Despite those two defeats, the Americans are still expected to qualify for the World Cup, considering the easier matches, at least on paper, that await them.
Mexico is probably the most talented team in CONCACAF and the usa has never won in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose (0-9-1), but Klinsmann was criticized for his lineup selection to start the Mexico game and the nature of the 4-0 loss at Costa Rica was more troubling than the loss itself. Throughout his five-year tenure, Klinsmann repeatedly annoyed those connected with the league by regularly belittling it and suggesting that players such as Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley harmed their progress by playing in MLS instead of in a European league.
“That wasn’t easy on a personal or a professional level”, Gulati, who hired Klinsmann in 2011 after a years-long pursuit, said of his dismissal.
While Gulati returned to New York, Flynn remained in Los Angeles to negotiate Arena’s contract, which was agreed to at 11:30 a.m. EST Tuesday and approved by the board 15 minutes later.
Despite the German’s defiance, last week’s 4-0 rout to Costa Rica proved to be the final straw, with U.S. turning to former boss Bruce Arena on Tuesday.
“I hope the experiences I have had are going to benefit the programme”, said Arena.
But Bradley noted the USA must move quickly to embrace Arena, who handed the midfielder his first two caps as a 19-year-old in 2006.
