Houston’s Herman leaving for Texas
Unlike many coaches who have succeeded at the college level, Herman has only been a college football head coach for two years.
I last wrote about shoveling the dirt on Strong’s tenure as the head coach at Texas, so I won’t be spending time on the past. Strong had two years left on a guaranteed contract that pays more than $5 million per year, but was the first coach in Texas history with three consecutive losing seasons.
And the quick search was by design.
Strong said he expects to meet with Texas President Greg Fenves and athletic director Mike Perrin on Saturday.
“Out of respect for those involved, we will not share further details about the search”, Fenves said, “but what is important is that in the end, we got our man”. It was impatient board members and influential donors who worked tried to lure Alabama’s Nick Saban while Mack Brown was still the Longhorns coach in 2013. He recognizes the Longhorns’ reputation as a premier team despite struggles on the field the past few seasons. However, it appears that Herman and his representatives were merely trying to leverage the LSU offer into a preferred one at Texas. “We will win championships”. “We didn’t get into the Big 12 this year so that definitely hurt our chances of keeping him”, said student Anthony Salcido.
The Longhorns have just seven commitments for the 2017 class but may sign only 15-17 players total. I want to thank everyone who supported me and this program for the last three years. I learned a great deal and grew as a person in my time here. He talked about gaining a relationship with some of Texas’ best high schools, making sure the state’s top student-athletes head to Austin.
Houston Vice President for Athletics Hunter Yurachek issued a statement confirming Herman’s departure.
Overall, Herman spent a decade as an assistant coach in the state, including stops at Texas Lutheran, Sam Houston State, Texas State and Rice.
Some students said it was too soon to fire Coach Charlie Strong while others say it was a legitimate move. I do understand that it comes down to wins and losses, and we have not done our job in that area yet. “I welcome that. I think that’s great”. The Charlie Strong Texas Football era is over and it looks like his successor has all but officially been decided. Herman says he ready to handle it all. During Herman’s stint at Houston, he was able to notch wins over Oklahoma, Florida State, and Louisville (twice), and he was undefeated against ranked opponents on the schedule. They surely are not used to landing five star studs like Ed Oliver, and they are not used to nearly stringing together consecutive 10 win seasons (never has happened in their history). Herman now turns his sights to the Texas Longhorns. While some blamed Brown for leaving the program in shambles, Strong’s lineups were still peppered with future National Football League talent. “But that certainly doesn’t take away from their emotions and passion for coach Strong”.
Herman cited Meyer’s discipline as a key ingredient in their success at Ohio State. He also has a penchant for kissing his players on the cheek before games.
“They just hit the reset button on the all of the recruiting wars in Texas”.
All of that came under different campus leadership than Herman has now. “This is not going to be Camp Texas around here, I can tell you that.”, he said. “This is going to be a very hard program, especially at first”.
In response, Strong revamped his whole coaching staff, letting go the majority his offensive staff.
“Pressure occurs when you’re unprepared.”
Warehime made $225,000 this season. “We need to change some things”.
He ended his post by directly speaking to his players.
“We’re prepared for this job”, Herman said. “We are prepared to be successful”.
