Former Ohio State assistant Tom Herman to coach at Texas, source says
Herman takes over a program that most see as loaded with talent that just hasn’t been able to win.
“I came away very impressed with their unified vision and commitment to football, and I’m excited to be the head coach at the flagship university of the greatest state in the union”.
Now it’s up to Herman to bring all that together and unleash it in Austin.
Just hours after Strong’s statement, Herman issued his own through UT.
Herman’s ties to Texas date back more than a decade.
Texas now has seven commitments, including five ESPN 300 recruits: QB Sam Ehlinger, defensive ends Ta’quon Graham and Lagaryonn Carson, and receivers Damion Miller and Montrell Estell. One of his first duties with the program was to sit with Heisman Trophy-winning running back Ricky Williams on a parade float, where he learned the “Hook ’em Horns” hand sign. The Tigers’ job opened up earlier this year after the school chose to fire Les Miles, while Longhorns coach Charlie Strong has seemed like a dead man walking ever since the team lost to Kansas last week. “He’s got an unbelievable way of coaching people and managing people”. Fenves and Perrin have been in their jobs less than two years.
Amid the Herman rumors this week of the coach being targeted by both LSU and Texas, No. 20 Houston lost to Memphis 48-44 on Friday. He stressed building relationships with his players and the necessity of proper preparation. “He’s been a double digit underdog three times in two years at Houston and has won all three of those games outright (twice over Louisville and once over Oklahoma)”.
Tom Herman, who has coached Houston into national prominence during the past two seasons, is headed to Texas.
Texas: Strong’s future looks bleak.
Herman will enjoy hitting the recruiting trail for the state’s flagship university and the wealth and prestige that comes with it.
“It’s a very hard day for me, my family and all of the people affected by this decision”, Strong said in a statement. “He showed me when he was in Ohio State that he was not only a very good coach, but a dynamite recruiter. It’s not even close anywhere in the country”. He played at Texas from 1987-90 before returning as a graduate assistant in 1999. “He’s a heckuva man and a heckuva football coach.’ I told them some of the things we’ll do in our program will be similar too”, Herman said. I am particularly intrigued by the kind of staff Herman will put around himself with that increase in budget and resources, as he was already doing an outstanding job down in 3rd Ward with a much tighter budget.
“I’ll miss the opportunity to lead this program going forward, but I’m ready to accept my next challenge”, Strong said. Our goal when we got here was to invest all of our time, effort and energy into improving the culture, fan support, facilities and national relevancy, so that if we ever left this university, it would be in a better place than when we got here.
