Trump electors start to switch to Clinton’s side
The popular vote serves as little more than a participation prize for a candidate who wins it – but not the Electoral College vote.
It is the fifth time the victor of the popular vote has lost the election. Reportedly there is a movement to deny Trump the presidency by electors refusing to cast their ballots for Trump when they meet on December 19. But enough about that. In response, Tom Woods recently hosted an episode of his podcast discussing the Electoral College with historians Kevin Gutzman and Brion McClanahan. The archaic, complex, and to most Americans, baffling way that USA presidents are selected.
Those states had voted Democratic in recent presidential elections but all voted narrowly in favour of the Republican Trump in this month’s election.
Donald Trump’s new campaign manager Kellyanne Conway outlined Thursday, August 18, 2016 her vision of the campaign’s strategy for the final stretch of the presidential race, vowing to “sharpen the message” and “win the argument every day” while. If the popular vote was the deciding factor, Clinton would not have won the popular vote. It’s true, at least as I understand it, that the original design of the electoral college was for electors to exercise their independent judgment about who would be the best president. In theory, it ensures presidential candidates will campaign more often in those regions.
Obama called Clinton and said “You need to concede”, after the Associated Press projected Pennsylvania to Trump around 1:30 a.m. ET, according to the report. However, mature voters do accept defeat if their candidate loses.
Earlier on Sunday, the president-elect reminded his Democratic rival that she had already admitted defeat, and published remarks from the presidential debates in which she had urged an acceptance of the poll results.
“The Constitution says nothing about “winner take all.’ It says nothing to suggest that electors” freedom should be constrained in any way”, Lessig wrote.
I prefer one person, one vote. As it is, the votes of 2 million Americans have been discounted.
That seems counter-productive to the basic concept of democracy.
Getting rid of the Electoral College is a heavy lift, politically.
All votes do not matter in this sense, but the actuality of it is where your vote matters. The Electoral College allows the voters to be represented from rural and suburban areas, including states like “little ol’ Luzianna”, and not just metropolitan areas.
People would feel more invested in the process, less disconnected from their government. But Cole said the process “makes states important” and helps minimize the impact of voter fraud in states that are “pretty lax on who they let vote”. The country as a whole should as well.
Sanders is hardly the only Democrat to call for a change in the Electoral College system following Trump’s upset win over Clinton. The state’s 16 electors will vote in the electoral college on December 19.
