Rodgers Tosses 2 TDs, Packers Beat Eagles 27-13
On a 1st-and-10 at the Eagles 39, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed a pass to Cook that would have resulted in a 2nd-and-8. “It was a small cheer”, the quarterback said, “so I figured either something good happened or it was incomplete”. With the Packers having failed to force a turnover in three of the last four defeats, defensive coordinator Dom Capers told reporters: “You just keep working at it”.
At 5-5 the Eagles aren’t quite removed from the #NFL Playoffs just yet. The Eagles will put better pieces around him than he had on Monday, when Ryan Mathews was out, Jordan Matthews left early, Nelson Agholor was a healthy inactive and the offensive line was shuffled around for a variety of reasons. However, Wentz and the offense soon cooled off, producing a punt, a field goal and an interception on Eagles’ next three drives. He is questionable to return to the Lincoln Financial Field gridiron on Monday night.
“You’ve got to win the first one to go on a run”, tackle Bryan Bulaga said. He knows it never will if this developing Eagles squad doesn’t learn the value of fighting to the finish. “Definitely a game we can build off of”. They started by scoring early for a change.
Rodgers made sure the Packers started fast, leading them to touchdown drives on the first two possessions.
The Packers entered the third quarter with a 17-13 advantage and extended their lead on a one-yard dive by fullback Aaron Ripkowski.
The play set up David Akers’ 37-yard field goal attempt after McNabb ran for another first down.
UP NEXT: The Packers host the Texans (6-5) while the Eagles visit the Bengals (3-7-1). But had they lost, their road to the postseason would have been perilous at best.
This was a much-needed win for the Packers, as they were definitely struggling prior to this victory. They needed to show themselves they can still do this. “You look at it, they were very basic plays”.
“I don’t think it’s so much [a lack of playmakers]”, Wentz said.
Rodgers hit wide receiver Davante Adams for both of his touchdown passes to resurrect the Packers’ outside hopes of forcing their way into the playoff picture following a disappointing campaign. Prior to the season, most experts anticipated the Packers would be tops in their division while the Eagles would be in a full rebuild with a new coach and new quarterback.
Monday was a gut-check for the Packers, and make no mistake who is responsible for the win – it was Aaron Rodgers. The difference this time is that Green Bay’s defense finally did its part and broke a streak where they’d allowed over 38 points per game in a 4-game stretch.
He threw a costly interception trying to hit tight end Zach Ertz on a seam route after the Eagles had breached Green Bay’s side of the field on their first possession of the second half and trailing 14-10.
And the biggest injury Rodgers may have to ice on the trip back to the Midwest is a strained back from carrying that declining supporting cast.
Adams was the beneficiary of Rodgers once more in the third quarter as the 12 year veteran threw a 50-yard pass, his longest of the night, with supreme accuracy over Adams’ shoulder and into the receiver’s outstretched arms. While Cox drew a holding penalty during the second half, he otherwise finished with just one tackle.
“It feels great”, Adams said. “But it’s something we got to seriously evaluate”.
So is it a one-off against a team that played poorly, or a sign of a late-season run?
“I’ve got to get out of my own head”, Agholor said afterward.
