Supergirl Recap With Spoilers: Medusa
Coming Out Alex wants to tell her mother (Helen Slater) that she’s gay at Thanksgiving dinner, but they’re interrupted by a mysterious space rift. Winn and James bicker, Kara is heating up the turkey with her eyes and Alex is stress drinking. Alex stops James as he’s buttering Kara up but Alex interrupts.
Kara then took that very same lesson and tried to apply it to Lena Luthor’s situation with her mother. The idea of an alien bio-terror threat should be a major deal (one Superman is curiously never called for, despite occurring at his own fortress) but the goal seems largely to have been to cement Lena’s loyalty* against her mother. Obviously, however, that ship has sailed and Lena is strong enough to do what she thinks is right even if it means continuing to disappoint the only mother she has ever known. Lena gives her mother the isotope and becomes another proper and evil Luthor and Cadmus preps to unleash the virus in the port. Mon-El mistakes him for J’onn and follows him outside, which inadvertently saves his life. Hank Henshaw retrieves what is known as the Medusa virus which was apparently designed by Lilian Luthor in an effort to eliminate all aliens including Krytonians.
In other confusing moments, Mon-El’s near-death experience somehow doesn’t convince him to tell Kara about his feelings. Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to figure out what CADMUS wanted with her blood. But Kara maybe reveals too much information when telling Lillian she recognizes her from Lena’s office! Lillian plays dumb, but Lena says that a reporter (Kara) is sniffing around. Mon-El, who definitely has feelings for Kara, tries to score points by sucking up to Eliza. The aliens we saw speeding towards Earth are after Mon-El, which probably has something to do with that secret he nearly confessed to Kara when they were both held captive by Cadmus.
It can be recalled that Kara was attacked by cyborg Superman in the previous episode only to get her blood. But she wasn’t the only one who was looking within.
Of course, using the weapon in a positive way might undermine the message in “Medusa” that this virus was xenophobic and unsafe but hey, it’s a tool like any other, and it seems to solve the predicament The CW heroes find themselves it. Medusa can kill any alien, but won’t affect Kryptonians. Maggie wants to be together because she has feelings for Alex too. J’onn’s subplot was one of the most engaging. She’s disappointed that her parents legacy might be death and destruction. Considering Supergirl already did a “family member is supportive but awkward” storyline with Kara, I like the choice to have Eliza immediately issue unconditional support of Alex’s newfound sexuality. Its a tall order to be sure, but when youve got a Cyborg Superman as your errand boy, and a military-grade rocket launcher stashed under a tarp at the local docks, Id say your chances of success are pretty high.
The next day, Lena takes a meeting with her mother to find out what’s going on. Supergirl goes to Lena for help.
Mon-El wakes up and admits to Supergirl that Eliza thinks he’s dying.
While on probation, Supergirl rips off the band-aid and asks if Mon-El is attracted to her. They asked for her help so that they could team up and fight a common enemy called The Dominators. Oh, that’s right, she’s a reporter.
Supergirl and J’onn arrive at the port just as Lena fires the weaponized Medusa in a missile at National City. Supergirl races after the missile while J’onn fights Henshaw. I have no problem with J’onn being the Green Martian again. The rocket still exploded but it did not hurt any aliens because it turned out that Lena made the virus inert by switching out the isotope. Instead of coming clean, Mon-El denies it, and that’s when he starts having trouble breathing. She went to the Fortress of Solitude and discovered the Project Medusa virus, which was created by her father to kill all alien life form, except those from Krypton. I don’t look forward to James and Winn ruining the fun when the show inevitably starts focusing on their mutual jealousy, but we’ll have to cross that bridge in 2017. Maggie shows up at Alex’s door with a pizza and it’s not a work visit.
Barry and Cisco finally jump out of the interdimensional portal in Kara’s apartment just as Kara walks in. His disappearence at the end of the episode is, I hope, long lasting.
