Ohio State University: Attacker killed, 11 hospitalized after campus attack
It wasn’t a shooter, but rather a man, now identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, who jumped a curb with his auto, plowing into pedestrians, and then started stabbing people.
Eleven people were injured when a student rammed his vehicle into a crowd at the Ohio State University (OSU) before attacking bystanders with a knife.
With almost 60,000 students at its main Columbus campus, Ohio State is one of the nation’s largest universities. Artan named the American-born Yemeni imam Anwar Al-Awlaki, who the U.S. accused of being an al-Qaeda recruiter and subsequently killed in a drone strike, in the post, calling him a “hero”.
Cassidie Baker, an Ohio State senior, said she saw police or paramedics helping one person on the ground outside Watts Hall, a materials science and engineering building. He engaged the suspect, who had gotten out of the vehicle after hitting pedestrians.
“It was fortunate that (the gas leak) did happen as it helped the officer be in the right place at the right time”, OSU Police Chief Craig Stone said.
There are conflicting reports on his age, between 18-20.
Police have not identified the man believed to be responsible for the incident, although multiple news agencies said he was a legal permanent resident who fled from Somalia with his family. NBC, citing law enforcement officials, reported that Artan was aSomali refugee who came to the United States legally with his parents in 2014 after living in Pakistan for seven years. Run hide fight. Watts Hall.
“I’m new here”, Artan said.
In a tweet and campus alerts Monday morning, OSU administration urged students to “Run Hide Fight” from what was initially described as an active shooter situation.
One faculty member, one staff member, three graduate students and three undergraduate students make up the victims, according to campus officials.
He is also a graduate from OSU in 2012 with a degree in security and intelligence and worked for the Student Safety Service while he was going to school. “Campus remains open during the continued investigation, although classes have been canceled for the remainder of the day”.
Asked about Artan, the vice president of marketing and communications at Columbus State told ABC News in a statement, “Abdul Razak Ali Artan was enrolled at Columbus State Community College from autumn semester 2014 through summer semester 2016”.
