Recount efforts underway in three US swing states
The day before Thanksgiving, Clinton’s lead over the president-elect in the popular vote grew to more than 2 million. Stein had 31,006 votes, and De La Fuente had 1,514 votes.
In Philadelphia, 40 affidavits were submitted as of 3:30 p.m., according to an employee for a city commissioner.
The state must complete the recount by the federal deadline of December 13.
Trump’s claims are unfounded, Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Edgardo Cortés said Monday.
Now that the payment has been received, the commission is ordering the recount to begin Thursday. “It will take time”, she said.
The Stein campaign says it’s not expecting to reverse the result of the election, but wants to test the ballot counting system.
“That group doesn’t necessarily think that there was anyone that messed with the election, but they do think there are vulnerabilities there”, Dr. Nick Clark, political science professor at Susquehanna University. If it’s not completed by then, Congress could decide which candidate gets the state’s 10 electoral votes.
On Monday, the Elections Commission released an estimate of almost $3.5 million. Stein raised those concerns over the weekend.
With the victory, Trump’s Electoral College total formally surpassed the 300 mark, a feat for a GOP White House hopeful also last achieved by the 41st president. But once again Trump offered no evidence to back up his claims, much as he did during the campaign when, as he was losing ground in some polls, he alleged that the voting system was rigged and corrupt.
At Monday’s meeting, Thomsen called Trump’s comments “unfortunate” and “insulting”. In just the past week, Stein’s recount effort has drawn in some $6.3 million in donations, a figure nearly double the amount she was able to raise in a year-long campaign for the Oval Office.
Stein also asked the commission to order county clerks to perform the recount by hand, but the commission rejected that request.
Representatives from the campaigns of any candidate on the ballot, including Clinton’s, may be present to monitor recount efforts as they take place.
In a video posted to her campaign website, Stein explains this particular recount will require election officials to “p through some hoops” to come to a decisive conclusion about which presidential candidate claimed Pennsylvania’s electors.
