Police confirm 76 dead in Chapecoense plane crash

It crashed at around 10 p.m. ET on Monday while on its way from Santa Cruz in Bolivia to Medellin’s worldwide airport, which is located at an elevation of 7,000 feet.

It was Colombia’s worst air accident since more than 160 people died on an American Airlines plane in 1995 in a mountainous area near Cali.

In 1993, 18 players and five officials from Zambia’s national team died in an air crash. But that game, against Atletico Nacional, will never be played.
Just three years ago the team had won its way back into Brazil’s top league, the Serie A, for the first time in 35 years.
