Two nights after nearly being traded, Mets’ Wilmer Flores completes emotional

Aaron Barrett tossed two scoreless innings out of the Nationals bullpen, and so this game went into extras.

A game that had a flawless ending for the Mets, thanks to Wilmer Flores, originally got off to a ideal start, thanks to Matt Harvey. During and after his at-bat, it was clear that Flores was beside himself and upset that he heard that news.

Tulowitzki played a key role in the win. It was a moment fraught with emotion for Flores. “I should have gone deeper into the game and gave us a chance”. Another reason why this is upsetting to Flores is because he has been with the Mets since he signed a contract at age 16, so the Mets are all he knows. LHP Jack Leathersich, who was at Triple-A Las Vegas, had Tommy John surgery Thursday. “It makes it fun to play every day”. After all of that, the trade was off, and both Wheeler and Flores were still on the Mets. Fast-forward to August 6th, 2013.

Wilmer! The Mets certainly have quickly reversed the negativity surrounding the club.

The Baltimore Orioles came from 6-0 down to beat the Detroit Tigers 8-7 with a three-run homer by Adam Jones and a two-run shot from Manny Machado.

With the score 3-3, Will Venable singled with a soft liner against Ramos (0-3) leading off the 11th and advanced to third when catcher J.T. Realmuto’s throw went into center field for an error.

The Mets should have given Harvey more run support, but stranded a combined five baserunners between the fourth and fifth innings. “Har-vey!” an inning earlier. He got his ninth strikeout of the game in top of the eighth as he retired Michael Taylor for the first out. He then allowed a one-out single by Jose Lobaton, who hit a liner just past a diving Flores at second base. Yunel Escobar was up for Nationals, and he was probably the one Washington player who consistently had good at-bats against Harvey all night long.

“Today, obviously, one pitch would have gotten us out of here a little bit sooner”, Harvey said.

Harvey continued into the top of the eighth, despite a pitch count approaching 110 and command that was losing its sharpness.

Neither team could put anything together in the 10th or 11th innings, so the game prolonged until the 12th. 898 OPS. However, right-handed hitters are batting.
