Pelosi challenger: House Dems need new message and messenger
“Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) on Sunday said Democratic lawmakers in the House understand the party needs “a new message and a new messenger”.
That’s what Conway tweeted in response to the news that Pelosi retained her position by getting 134 votes to Tim Ryan’s 63. Please see our terms of service for more information.
But it’s worth noting that the small-but-vocal caucus of House Democrats challenging Pelosi aren’t publicly complaining about committee posts right now.
Clyburn is the lone member of the Congressional Black Caucus on the top leadership team, and African-American lawmakers anxious that Pelosi’s proposal would keep older black lawmakers from the position.
“And the numbers are big, but they know that if we don’t get the middle of the country that we’re never going to be back in the majority”, Ryan said.
Ryan said in his letter having a Democratic leadership position “has never been my life’s ambition”, but the results of the November election caused him to reevaluate his role within the caucus and said more voices are needed at the Democratic Leadership table. “I will support all those we elect to leadership positions. But the party is better off”, he added.
“I think, in part, we try to slice the electorate up”, he said. It’s about the character of America.
The post Pelosi challenger says House Democrats need new message appeared first on PBS NewsHour. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., were allowed to vote in Wednesday’s caucus elections. Shortly after this month’s election, she claimed that “the problem was more with the communication than it was with our policy”. She cleared that threshold on Wednesday, but Ryan’s tally will not go unnoticed.
Republicans certainly hope the rest stick with Pelosi.
“At this critical juncture, we face a choice – will we preserve a broken status quo or will we set our party on a new course?” This is not Nancy pushing things, it’s the caucus pushing it. Pelosi had proposed retaining Rep.
“We should have been recruiting earlier, we should have better targeting”. Mr. Gallego said in a statement.
Pelosi previously defeated a challenge in 2010 from then-Rep.
Democrats have had contested fights for lower leadership positions but not for the top spot. House Speaker Dennis Hastert resigned after Republicans lost their majority in the 2006 elections.
Pelosi’s top two lieutenants, who have served by her side for years, were also re-elected, both by acclimation. She has already proposed some reforms to caucus rules to respond to the push from newer members that there are few opportunities to advance. “She’s coming to terms with the idea that people want her to move on”.
“That’s not taking anything away from Nancy Pelosi or Steny Hoyer or Jim Clyburn”.
The 43-year-old has been in a member of the House since 2003.
