Donald Trump says millions voted illegally, offers no proof
Wisconsin’s unofficial election results show Trump with 1.4 million votes, compared to 1.38 million to Clinton.
Representatives from the campaigns of any candidate on the ballot, including Clinton’s, may be present to monitor recount efforts as they take place.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission voted Monday to proceed with a recount and will bill Stein and other interested campaigns for the costs, estimated to be at least $3.5 million.
“We do not have one instance of that happening”, McAuliffe said. The recount would then begin on Thursday.
Donald Trump threw more gasoline on the fire this weekend when he falsely claimed that he only lost the popular vote because “millions” of people voted for Hillary Clinton illegally. Stein intends to challenge the ruling in court.
University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist Barry Burden said Trump’s position is complicated.
The win gives the president elect 306 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton’s 232.
But Stein’s effort could help her in other ways.
Even as Trump weighs major decisions that will shape his presidency, he’s been unable to avoid being distracted by the recount effort.
She could conceivably tip the electoral balance in the remote event that all switched to her in recounts.
The Green Party presidential candidate requested a recount on Friday. In effect, Trump is lending credence to the very same recount effort that he criticized as superfluous.
Trump falsely claimed on Twitter early Sunday that he “won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally” and went on – again with no evidence – to claim “serious voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California”.
Thomsen said Monday that “ultimately at the end of the day, the count is going to be the same”. Trump captured more states and claimed victory in the Electoral College.
Speaking to reporters Monday, McAuliffe laughed when asked about Trump’s comments. The whole episode reminds me of how every Republican on stage at the first GOP primary debate raised their hands and agreed to support the eventual nominee – except for Trump.
The Election Commission voted unanimously to reject Stein’s requests for a hand recount and instead allow all 72 counties to decide which method to use. “They are not expecting the outcome to change here”. State officials must have their new tally completed by December 13, according to federal law.
“In Wisconsin elections are fair and accurate and conducted by hard working people, my fellow citizens”, Thomsen said. Stein estimates the Pennsylvania recount will cost $500,000.
Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake said this past weekend a “get tough” policy that isolates Havana and restricts travel and commerce will hurt the Cuban people and make the US government “a convenient scapegoat for failed socialist policies”. States that miss those deadlines risk not having their electoral votes counted. In addition, turnout was down 16,000 votes since 2012 in counties that Clinton won, versus up 82,000 votes in counties Trump won in MI.
Wednesday is the recount filing deadline for MI, a state that President-elect Donald Trump won by 10,704 votes out of 4.8 million cast. He says the records in the equipment could have been manipulated in an attack. The commission is holding an emergency telephone conference to approve the timeline.
