Groups document more than 860 hate incidents since elections
There are several first-person accounts included in the report which give examples of some of these incidents involving racism directly related to Trump’s rhetoric.
The Southern Poverty Law Center also noted following Trump’s election win, “the language, literature, and symbols of white nationalism have cropped up throughout the country”. In Arlington, Virginia, a woman was crossing the street when two white men yelled from their vehicle: “You better be ready because with Trump, we can grab you by the pussy even if you don’t want it”.
Since Mr Trump appointed Breitbart executive chairman Stephen Bannon as his chief strategist, the Ku Klux Klan celebrated and took credit for his success and it has given rise to the alt-right, a white supremacist movement. There are arguments to be made that Obama should have stayed in campaign mode to put pressure on Congress and various interest groups. but speaking to 15,000 people in Columbus every other weekend is not the most efficient use of a president’s time.
“In order for our children to survive, to grow, to thrive, they have to feel safe at school and feel their parents are safe”, Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers, said at a press conference Tuesday.
In their report, Ten Days After, they report finding hundreds of cases of attacks against minorities – including instances of violence and intimidation – some of which they directly link to the surprise Trump victory on 8 November.
Police officials in the aforementioned cities have reiterated that in addition to these new efforts, they are still investigating reported incidents as they normally do.
“We have excluded incidents that authorities have determined to be hoaxes; however, it was not possible to confirm the veracity of all reports”, the report says.
Trump has said he condemns the incidents, telling The New York Times in an interview that “I don’t want to energize the group, and I disavow the group”, he said.
Numerous incidents involved students taunting classmates with variations on Trump’s campaign rhetoric, such as threats to build a wall around or deport Latino students.
According to the report, schools have been the most common sites of the spike in harassment and bullying.
According to a survey from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the increase in harassment began days following the election.
“President-elect Trump’s first commitment to the American people was to be a president for “all Americans” and to “bind the wounds of division” in our country”, said SPLC President Richard Cohen at a press conference.
OR and Washington were in the top 10 states for post-election hate incidents.

Many of these incidents also contain a reference to president-elect Trump, the report said. And a lesbian couple in Austin, Texas, reported that “DYKE”, “Trump” and a swastika were painted on their door. Whether Trump was ultimately elected or not, his campaign alone pushed the ideas of white nationalists and other right-wing hate groups into the mainstream with more visibility than such groups have seen in years, empowering them with a high-profile voice. In Dallas, where the majority of students are Latino, Costello said fewer hate incidents have been reported, but kids are coming to school with fear.
Abdelall said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation documented a 67 percent rise in hate crimes against Muslims between 2014 and 2015 and that her organization, which has been tracking hate crimes, suspects that number will rise again in 2016.
“What he hasn’t done is acknowledge that his own words have sparked this barrage of hate that we’re seeing”, Cohen said Tuesday.
Some incidents were directed at the Trump campaign or its supporters, the group noted. “If President-elect Trump wants to bring America together and be a leader for all Americans, he will need to disavow the unsafe proposals and ideas that single out and demonize Muslims and other communities”.
