Democrat’s lead widens in North Carolina governor’s race
DMV spokesman Robert Broome said Friday the agency has responded to State Board of Elections requests for records on more than 8,100 ballots since Wednesday. In fact, some analysts are speculating that we won’t know the victor of this race until after well after Thanksgiving.
Durham officials said “minor complications” occurred starting early on Election Day. Munn said absentee ballots are common in Bladen County because of “harassment and intimidation at the polls”.
Of course, one would expect challenges to such a scheme to wend their way to the state Supreme Court in relatively short order, where, hopefully, justice would prevail.
Counties are still working through formal election protests, supported by Republican Gov.
It is illegal to exchange money for votes or to pay someone to commit voter fraud in the State of North Carolina and under federal law. Smith said the process for resolving this begins with a preliminary hearing to see if there is probable cause. The provisional ballots would be counted, and a victor would be declared. Those voters had until 5 p.m. Thursday to show proof of residency but Smith is not sure how many were resolved.
The State Board of Elections is updating race tallies as counties submit results that include votes cast as either provisional or absentee ballots.
If the McCrory campaign has enough evidence of voting irregularities to call for a contested election and the race between McCrory and Cooper remains too close to call, the North Carolina House of Representatives would be the final decision-maker in who occupies the governor’s mansion for the next four years. Libertarian candidate Lon Cecil gained 17.
McCrory holds a almost 8 percent margin over Cooper in Robeson County, where each made stops in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.
This one isn’t just going to come down to counting the rest of the military and absentee ballots.
The campaign said that the complaints were filed by registered voters, asking for county elections boards “to void anywhere between 100 to 200 ballots cast by suspected felons, dead people and double voters”. Staff recommendations must then be approved or amended by local boards of election before the eligible votes are counted.
Before all the votes are counted, election officials must decide the eligibility of more than 60,000 provisional ballots and the validity of thousands of challenged votes.
McCrory’s campaign also is trying to make the case for delays because, it says, allegations of rampant voter fraud must be investigated before results can be finalized. It is time for Pat McCrory to accept he’s lost, stop wasting taxpayer time and money, and allow for the peaceful transition of power.
The governor trails Democrat Roy Cooper by about 5,000 votes now.
The governor’s campaign is also filing protests in Halifax, Edgecombe, Franklin, Guilford, Nash, Northampton, Robeson, Vance, Wake, and Warren counties, urging complete investigations into the absentee ballots and a review of witness signatures.
