Eagles defense not getting job done on third down
Aaron Rodgers was 9-for-10 for 94 yards and a 105.8 passer rating on third down. Merrill Reese has been an institution in Philadelphia for the last 40 years and is a voice of the Eagles Nation.
Actually the problem with the Packers had been their defense. The other guy had more to work with, no question about that, but when the game began no one was as sure of that as they were afterward. That is assuming that the Texans’ secondary doesn’t get fully exploited by one of the better receiving groups in the league. The bad news is that if the Eagles can’t find a way to generate more pressure, there could be many more losses in their future.
In generating 387 total net yards, the Packers did not commit a turnover, and Rodgers was not sacked. The stats will read that Rodgers completed 30 passes from 39 attempts, for 313 yards and two touchdowns, but there was a clinical element in the 27-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles that goes beyond the numbers. “They did a good job of game-planning, he was getting rid of the ball and when he’s not holding the ball, you can’t get to him”. The Packers converted 10 of 14 times on third downs: at 71%, that was the highest rate by any team in a game this season and the Packers’ highest in a game since 2013.
And conversely the confidence of the Eagles began to sag.
Rodgers was outstanding from the start, leading Green Bay to consecutive TD drives. “His ability to make those throws and their receivers made great catches”.
The tennis match continued on the next Green Bay possession, when Rodgers rifled a 20-yard touchdown pass to Adams, who made a diving catch in the end zone to make it 14-7 with 14 minutes, 53 seconds left in the second quarter.
“It’s been a rough stretch”, Rodgers said.
On the very next play, Rodgers lofted a ideal 50-yard strike to Adams. Adams who has struggle since entering the leauge burned cornerback Leodis McKelvin which seems to be a common occurrence for all WRs. “A couple like where Jalen Mills breaks it up and it falls into Jordy Nelson’s hands, so it was just a rough day”. “But if the quarterback is making quick decisions, smart decisions, like he was, you’re not going to be able to get to him. But the referees are going to call that, even if they think it is close”. Rodgers and Matthews finished the game.
In the run game, Ryan Mathews was out with injury which gave a opputunity to Wendell Smallwood but he only had nine carries. The result was a little surprising as the Packers were just 1-4 on the road heading into the game while the Philadelphia Eagles were 4-0 as hosts.
Rodgers’ pocket awareness and his ability to feel the rush have always been among his strengths.
“We need to go out here and we just need to get better, collectively, including me”, Graham said on Wednesday.
