Amid some opposition, House Democrats re-elect Pelosi as leader
Nancy Pelosi to serve as House Minority Leader on Wednesday. The challenge from Rep. Ryan will force Nancy Pelosi to incorporate a more inclusive leadership style, and also prompt her to propose the elevation of junior lawmakers within her party.
Rice tweeted back: “1st step in learning from 2016: Don’t let DNC/DCCC staffers pick favorites in internal party elections”.
The state’s two other Democratic congressional members, Mark Pocan and Gwen Moore, both voted for Pelosi. The party members had been set to vote on new leadership November 17, but delayed the election in light of the party’s debilitating loss in the November 8 general election.
“The American people sent a very clear message on November 8th that the status quo is not working”. “They’ve cleaned our clock in the Midwest”, Lynch said, saying he backed Ryan because he believed “he could help reconnect us with that demographic”.
“I’m very anxious we just signed the Democratic Party’s death certificate for the next decade and a half unless we change and adopt what Tim’s been talking about, which is really a workingman and -woman’s agenda, regardless of who you are”, Schrader told reporters.
“That’s exactly what she predicted”, he told reporters. “I’m a woman of steel in there”.
“Honored to be elected by my colleagues to serve as Democratic Leader”.
Even though he fell far short of toppling Pelosi, Ryan still claimed some victories Wednesday – including a dispersal of power inside the House Democratic Caucus and plans to focus on the economic, bread-and-butter issues that many Democrats say Donald Trump swiped from them in the election.
“I think the level of frustration in our caucus is as great as I’ve ever seen it”, Ryan said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press”.
The 76-year-old Pelosi has been promising some changes to assuage concerns in her caucus, including adding a member of the freshmen class to her leadership team. Republican lawmakers and party officials rejoiced at the Democrats’ decision.
Nonetheless Pelosi projected confidence heading into the vote. However, sniping about Nancy Pelosi’s age and undermining her leadership is not a strategy to protect hard-working families from Republicans’ destructive agenda or win back the House. But it reveals that dozens in her caucus voted against her in secret ballots.
She agreed to delay what had become largely perfunctory caucus elections earlier this month after members urged against rushing a vote.
In addition to re-electing Pelosi, House Democrats also re-elected Congressman Steny Hoyer, D-Md., as Democratic Whip and Congressman Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., as Assistant Democratic Leader. According to aides, she beat fellow California Rep. Barbara Lee, 98-96, and will replace Joe Crowley of NY, who was elected to succeed term-limited Rep. Xavier Becerra of California as House caucus chairman.
Pelosi’s leadership and legacy will be tested during the 2018 midterm election, when the Democrats have the opportunity to take back the House for the first time since 2011.
